Description Here's something a little different: An old-style black and white image, all done digitally. I was feeling rather crummy yesterday, so I expressed my displeasure via a drawing. This was actually inspired by a very short piece of fan fiction that someone did, the ending of which I liked and decided to interpret via a sketch. On another note, this is probably the first time I've ever drawn a character smoking.

Note: Any critique would be greatly appreciated!

I think this piece is hurt by some inconsistency in the lighting. For example the shading on his nose is different from his that of his cheeks. Also, I can't make out the shape of his pipe.

You're absolutely right, and I thank you for this critique because I don't get enough of it. Lighting is something that I have a lot of trouble with, namely because I don't practice it or study it enough. Still, the mistakes I made here are pretty obvious. I guess I just wanted to get the piece done and so ended up rushing it, leaving in certain errors in the process. Consistency and believability are more important than churning out a composition at light speed, however. Next time I light something I'll try and take more care to get the lighting scheme correct.

Thank you very much for the critique! I really appreciate it.

nice...seems like you're getting a lot of art ideas from fanfics recently~ I dont mind ^^ you're really great at bringing the mood and expression out of a character so even the blind can see it. Still something I'm really struggling with myself lD

also shading...you can shade...my goodness can you shade!

Thanks, dude!

Cha. There are some fun stories out there. This fandom has done wonders, let me tell you. I've been animating and writing again even! Incredible.

Don't worry. I really struggle with it, too. Honestly, I do have a hard time getting the emotion of characters to show through, and it's even harder when it comes to adding to that emotion via colors and lighting. It takes a lot of work, but it's worth the effort. Just keep at it! You've got mad skills, yo. Don't give up!!

Aww, gee. I think the shading kinda stinks, but thank you!

This is wonderful! The color really brings out the mood more. I can actually feel what Oncie is thinking....
