The photograph used as a reference can be found in this batch of images: [link]I am in physical agony in regards to how bad this looks, and I'm not kidding. Due to my incompetence and ignorance, the cello's shape and position was completely screwed. Less focus on detail and more attention to actual proportions is definitely needed. Nevertheless, I wanted to upload this because I like how the rat came out. Other than that, this is pretty much crap in my eyes. It will probably go the "Scraps" pile eventually.

I dont think you should be so hard on yourself when you can make something this brilliant! sure the cello proportions are a little off but what about the rat? He (she?) looks incredible and oh so cute

Well, there are quite a few mistakes there, particularly in regards to the cello, but you're right in that I am kinda hard on my art. I probably shouldn't be overly-critical. Ha-ha.
Mmm... I'm not sure if the rat is a he or she. I think it might be a female, though.

Well I think it looks fantastic! I should probably know this but have you any rats yourself? It's clear that you're fond of them what with all the rat sketches and of course the ratatouille references on your page

Hmm. Yeah, the cello needs work, you put the f-holes (s-holes?) down way too low and missed one of the tuning knobs.
IMO, that rat looks more like a hamster. Looking at the photo ref, I think you could improve it by making his face longer. Also, even though we can't see it in the photo, you could add his tail to give a more rat-like appearance.
But I still love this drawing! I always love seeing artwork based off string instruments, and the addition of a cute animal makes it even better!

Yes, indeed. There are quite a few mistakes there. I'll definitely have to be aware of where I place things, as well as the overall structure of the objects and characters I draw.
You're right. The rat does look more hamster-like. My own style of drawing is partially the reason for this, although I definitely agree with you in that the face could be longer so as to distinguish the creature as a rat and not something else. As for the tail, I debated putting it in, but thought that it might distract from the main focus, so I left it out.

In all honesty, there's some fantastic stuff here. You just need to find the things that are bothering you, start over, and prioritize them. You definitely know what you're doing, and what you need to do. Don't kick yourself. Use it to learn. It's not about being perfect, it's about being better.

Thanks. You're right. I'll try again (maybe not with this piece, but with another piece). I know it's about improvement more than perfection. It's probably just the amount of stress I'm dealing with right now that caused me to be so particularly hard on this drawing....
