Good golly, if this is your "not as good as other stuff" drawing then you blow my "I spent 500 hours on this" drawings out of the water. Slight exaggeration on my part, but stiiiiill! This is awesome!

Awww. Well, as artists, we're constantly striving to improve! I don't think I'll ever be truly satisfied with my work, but the journey for "perfection", which is impossible to attain, is the fun of it all!

Thank you for the kind words, and don't give up on art!!

Very true! Aws, that was meant as encouragement for you. I guess it came out wrong. I've definitely seen improvement, so you're definitely on the right track.

You're very welcome! Don't worry, I won't give up on art. I've made peace with the fact that there will always be people better than me (which is something I can't change) and so I've learned to focus on what I can change (practicing and improving.)

Thank you for your encouragement.

Oh! I'm so sorry that I interpreted it the wrong way. In that case, thanks for the encouragement! Ha-ha.

Well, good for you for looking on the bright side of things. The most important thing, really, is to have fun!

And you're welcome!!

No worries! You're most welcome! You deserve all the encouragement in the world and so much more!

Haha, thank you! Too true! What's the point of stressing over something when you can have fun with it, right?

You're amazing!!

You're so sweet.

You're welcome! You're right in that stressing over stuff is pointless. Better to look at the good side of things.

Awww. Thanks! As are you!!

Why, thank you! I find it humorous that, out of all the designs in the series of animals I've done, this one is my least favorite... but is most everyone else's favorite. Heh.

This is really adorable. Critics are hard to give, as being a cartoon artist myself, I know that you have a lot of freedom in interpreting bodily aspects. But perhaps you might want to reconsider the head size. Making the head bigger is a basic rule for cuteness, sure, but it unfortunately does not work that good on realistically shaped rodents. To me, it looks just a slight bit front-heavy. I know it is hard to put those big cartoon eyes somewhere, they eat up a lot of room on the head, and need to be balanced by the rest. But perhaps just give it a quick shot on Photoshop, mark the whole head and "shrink" it just ever so slightly, and see if you like the result.
The lower front side and underside might be a bit "pointier" to give it a more rat-like approach. But for that, you would have to break the line going from above the eye to the nose tip, bringing it up by some degrees in front of the eyes. This can easily get a different look than you might have aimed for with this character, though.

But overall, this is one cute character you created here, and a really well-done picture. And the expression is priceless. Way to go! Love your work!
Cheers,
Chris

Thank you so very much for the critique! In all honesty, I don't get enough of it. I definitely agree with you in regards to the head size. It's a touch too big, so I'll try to remember to watch out for that next time. As for giving the shape of the rat a more "pointy" look (at least in regards to certain areas), I purposely rounded and curved parts that would normally be a bit more edgy.

Thanks, again, for the kind comments and critique!

You are very welcome! One thing I love at art is that even the best artist will remain a student for all his remaining life. Even the "Nine Old Men" from Disney used to learn and train new things until very late. Positive critique is sharing that spirit. This one is, by the way, the first I have ever given (and only because I studied rat and mouse shapes/differences recently). Glad you enjoyed it so much!

Mitch-el In reply to SierraRomeo [2012-12-19 19:47:46 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. As artists, we're constantly learning and striving for the unattainable, which is perfection. In regards to the "Nine Old Men", I heard that Milt stated that he "hated drawing" only because he could never realize what he saw in his head onto the paper. Here was one of the best artists in the business, and even he got frustrated with his work! Heh.

Really now? Well, I'm very grateful that you gave it, because I can always use more critique. Thanks, again!
