Description

created in Artrage 5

The German cruiser Prinz Eugen and the Bismarck encounter the Prince of Wales and Hood. The battle lasted little more than 20 minutes, in which time the Battlecruiser Hood was very quickly sunk. Although the accepted view is that it was the Bismarck who sank the Hood, I have come across some claims that it was actually the Prinz Eugen who delivered the fatal hit, but perhaps the truth will never be known

Its hard to tell, the ships where more than a Kilometer apart, and both ships are shooting at the other ships, and since Bismarck and the hoof sank, there now is a gap of information

two sisters Bismarc and Tirpitz alwasy goes to mission with Prinz Eugen...Bismarc which is one the best ship engineering in history has been sunk alone because of Prinz Eugen must be turn back by mulfunciton....Tirpitz "the lonely queen of northern" also leave from Prinz Eugen one more time when she found in fyords....I think Prinz Eugen was the most luckiest ship in fleet.

awesome paint btw. loved it.

Very interesting. Β If you are a believer in karma, then perhaps the Prinz Eugen did in fact deliver the fatal hit. Β It was given to the U.S. by the U.K. after WWII and was subjected to at least two nuclear explosions at Bikini atoll. Β After giving the ship a hellacious dosing of radiation, etc. she was towed to the south were she ended up running aground in a storm and sank. Β So, there's that. Β

I read that the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen both landed hits on HMS Prince of Wales, and vice versa. It was a brutal battle indeed.

that may be true regarding the hits, but i think the Prinz Eugen was itself not struck in the fight, and following this it still went on to raid some merchant shipping i believe while the Bismarck tried to return to port for repairs and was then caught on all sides british forces

Yes, I remember reading that after HMS hood was sunk, there was a long chase across the straits, involving a first, unsuccessful air attack, some destroyers, a second (and the successful) air attack with the Swordfish Bombers which disabled the rudder, and finally that constant pounding by HMS Rodney, Dorset and King George V.

I am not the best with my Naval history, but I think I got my facts straight there...

yes you are right, - there is a good summary account given by the Sabaton History vids on youtube too - following on the awesome Bismarck song from Sabaton they just released recently - its video is something to behold in itself and the song is superb too

Is it possible to depict the entire battle? That would be pretty spectacular!

Mitchellnolte In reply to The-Blue-EM2 [2019-06-01 07:20:11 +0000 UTC]

that would be cool, i am not sure how one would depict the full battle unless its from some aerial view, - my other thought would the depiction of each of the ships at the time of the battle

Maybe four separate paintings, one for each ship, and then stitch them together?

thats a thought, - doing each of the ships yes definitely though to stitch them together, i think would have to be something else entirely - i wish i had more time to devote to this! i have a couple a dismarck concepts already done

This is amazing work, nice to see another prospective of the battle. I'd loved to see your view on the other ships since Hood is my favourite ship. If you planned to do so of course.Β

Thanks! you know i was considering that, - next i was doing is the Bismarck who was moving behind the Eugen hence not being in this image - i have a few others i have been tinkering away at too also such as Scharnhorst, Warspite and from WW1 Battle of Jutland, SMS Rheinland vs Black Prince

Interesting you mention this about Bismark NOT being the killer of Hood. I have held that pet theory ever since I first started reading about this battle. It began because BismarkΒ  just didn't have the training and accuracy or experience that Prinz Eugen had. I understand Murphy can always allow a "Golden BB" ( As it happened with whatever shot did penetrate the magazines of Hood And later with the Torpedo into rudder of Bismark)) I just cannot fully accept it.

Prinz Eugen and her crew had several months worth of experience over Bismarck, that they may have scored that lucky hit on the HMS Hood is, at the very least, plausible.
