Description This is a LOGO I designed for my local municipality's live Tribute Show to the musical HAIRSPRAY, which will premier in October '08. Color-wise, this is based on the stage show colors and typeface, but I designed everything else. This will probably be used on T-shirts and flyers. Executed in Photoshop Elements, and Corel Photopaint. This is one of those jobs that I actually get paid for.

I love it! Nice! I love vinatge. 1900-1950s especially, though Hairpsray was set in 1962, I still love its aura of retro.

Thank you. I was a bit disapointed that the client didn't buy or use the design, but that's how it goes.

Oh, too bad.well, it still doesn't change the fact that it is phenomenal. I has the retro feeling I just love.

You are most kind, Sir.
The client ended up STEALING an existing HAIRSPRAY poster design from on-line and using that! When they contacted me about doing an original design, they were very adament that I did not steal anything from any actual HAIRSPRAY designs or posters! But when it came down to dollars and cents, they went ahead and stole!

Wow, that's awful. Well, what comes around goes around, it's their lose that they are too insecure and that they do not have enough talent to actually not consider plagiarism. They should be ashamed of themselves. Criminals.

Thank you! That was the idea. To have it reflect the Broadway poster art, yet be original and professional enough for a local production to use. As it turned out, they cheaped out and did NOT use this art.

MJBivouac In reply to Amarante-Kun [2009-01-29 02:21:52 +0000 UTC]

You HAD to ask!
The cheap basta.... I mean "people"...just copied the Broadway poster art... and BADLY. When I showed them this design, they liked it BUT were very concerned that it not infringe on copyright, or be an exact copy of the Broadway poster! I assured them that I did not NEED to copy anything! I was a real live designer, and this design was original and unique, but kept the spirit of the Broadway poster art. They were excited and pleased to hear that, but apparently not pleased enough to pay for my design. So they decided to risk the lawsuit that they had been so concerned about, by having their own on-staff graphic designer simply copy the Broadway poster art exactly...which cost them NOTHING!
Typical! When it comes right down to it, CHEAP wins almost every time.

I'm used to it! Why buy original art when you can steal almost anything off the internet? It's just so common a practice these days.

I did seek him out and was familiar with his products...but had not heard about the plagiarism charges. From What I saw and read on-line, the guy seems to be a real asshole, who thinks the rest of the world is too stupid to see what he is doing.

Thank you! I was pretty happy with it. When I showed it to the client, he was concerned that I had lifted it from the real ad campaign for the live show. But it was my own creation, and he was VERY happy to have this since it looked so "professional"....like I would give him anything less!

Well, everyone's already said it but I'll say it again this looks great. I'm wondering though if the colors could be made more viberant? Make it really Pop.

Keep on keeping on .

The colors are pretty bright in the original. It may look lighter due to the lower resolution and your own monitor's settings. Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks Borat,
It's going to get a few adjustments before it gets used, but it's almost there. My clients were all concerned that i had out and out stolen the design elements form the stage production website. But when I told them that we had ONLY borrowed the logo and typeface, and that everything else was completely original, they were very pleased and excited.

I think every John Waters movie deserves a tribute poster from you. Waters is more unlikely to sue as well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MJBivouac In reply to zergspice [2008-02-18 03:06:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, this is for a REAL live show, being done by my local municipality, based on the MUSICAL version of HAIRSPRAY...so I feel pretty safe about creating it. If Waters wants to try and sue me, he isn't going to get very much.

i forget that hairspray is a musical based on a movie. i also tend to forget that hairspray is a movie based on a musical based on a movie. i think you are safe from John Waters though.

It a mainstream movie musical with a serious message about physical and racial tolerence and equality, based on a broadway musical with a serious message about physical and racial tolerence and equality, based on a low budget movie that was more or less a parody of DIRTY DANCING, with a not so serious message about physical and racial tolerence and equlity.

I was actually a fan of the original John Waters film, long before it became a pop culture penonmenon on stage and as a film musical. Some people don't seem to know that it was a a low budget film from several years ago.
Thanks,

This is a hell of a piece of work, MJ! Great job!

I'll admit I haven't seen the Travolta version, but I'll always love the musical, no matter who's in it... though naturally Divine did the best!

In all fairness, the film version is very enjoyable. Everyone in it does a really great job. Christopher Walken is GREAT as the Dad..but Travolta seems to be there just because they wanted a famous actor completely unexpected, in drag, in that roll. I like Travolta in a lot of films...Pulp Fiction being one of my faves, but he is really miss-cast in this one.
Thanks fdor the kind words regarding the logo.

CRAP! How lousy the film must have been if you could not even READ the lines and lyrics! I enjoyed the film, BUT I thought that Travolta was not very good. And much of what i did not like about him was his dialogue execution and delivery...which would not mean a whole lot to you even if you could read the lines. He kept loosing his accent! He started with some kind of slightly Minnasotan accent which would come and go depending on the scene. I was not impressed with him. If you get the chance, see the ORIGINAL John Waters film with DIVINE as the Mom. He was great in the roll.

Know what's ironic? I ENJOYED the movie even without dialogue...all the scenes and action at least gave me an impression of what is happening: the plus-size cutie has such a zest for life and she gets to be on her favorite TV show, too. She also stands up for her black friends and had to go hide in a bomb shelter when she hit a policeman on the head with the protest sign.XD Travolta himself was pretty amusing in drag as a padded mama. The movie itself has such zany 1960s visuals...must remind you of your childhood, BTW.^_^

(Oh, and that girl's face reminds me of Betty Rubble's in your poster.)
