Description Prismacolor pencils, Faber Castell india ink brush tip pen, and white Cell Vinyl on Canson colored art paper.
This is the final art for a commission. I really had fuin with it and finished it in one sitting. It's a variation on the classic Archie Comics THREE ON A SODA image of Archie, Betty and Veronica. The client asked that I have Shaggy from Scooby Doo take Archie's place and so I have.

Oh yeah! I remember that Archie used to publish SD comics in the mid 1990's, until Time Warner bought Turner, and Archie lost the rights to DC Comics!

Yes, I guess they did. Seems to me the SD universe could dovetail fairly well into the Archieverse.

Most certainly. But I was specifically trying to capture the style, but really shooting for a pre-Decarlo Archie look.

The GGs are a bit hard to watch now. Those episodes have very little story, and were trying so hard to be a Saturday Morning "Laugh-In". A friend of mine does a perfect immitation of "Wolfie" and "Frankie", and he once entertained me with a give and take exchange between the two characters like we might have heard on the show:

Wolfie:"Hey Frankie, why does a werewolf lick his balls?"
Frankie:"I don't knmow Wolfie...why does a werewolf lick his balls?"
Wolfie:"Because he CAN! A woo-woo-WOOOOOO!."
Frankie:"Oh! I needed that..."

You may not have heard of it, but a few years before Sabrina and the GGs, there was Milton the Monster on Saturday morning which is currently available on DVD, and is MUCH more entertaining than the Ghoulies.

Classic stuff there!

I trued watching the GGs on Boomerang which is an awesome sister station of Cartoon Network, it's bread an butter is older cartoons, from the late 50s into the 90s, as a life long cartoon fan i can appreciate it. They were one of the things I built up in my mind. A lot of the stuff I liked so much as kid, seems to be kind of cheesy and not in a good way as an adult, although some of it can still be enjoyed in a nostalgic way. I am always happily surprised when the stuff actually stands the tests of time. I know of Milton, mostly because of re-remembering it online, but I don't think I ever saw it in reruns on tv as a kid. I'll have to check it out. I do though have a bunch of the GGs music, as well as a bunch of other cartoon band, the Pussycats, the Scooby stuff from the where are you era, and my favorite of the bunch The Banana Splits to name a few.

This is stuff you really do have to experience first as a kid. If you discover it as an adult, it's much less appealing. One of my Bosses is about my age, and we do sometimes talk about old Tv and cartoons...but he has become so bitter and judgmental over the years, he is very critical of a lot of the old 'classics'. Sure Speed Racer by today's standards has some pretty poor animation, but when your 10 or 11 that was a great damned show. I can slip back into my childhood and still enjoy these old shows. And being an artist and interested in animation, I better understand what it takes to create even a few minutes of animation, good or bad. My Boss in no artist at all, and thinks he's now so sophisticate and mature, it's cool to be critical of things that are not perfect in his opinion.

MojoBrown In reply to MJBivouac [2011-05-07 15:50:20 +0000 UTC]

I really do agree with this. If you saw it as a child, you can sort of relate how it applied to the time. This was the height of what people were doing when it was made, and you can view it subjectively in retrospect. I never noticed how limited Speed racer was with it's animation as a child, and by the time I did, I didn't care. Sure, it's fun to joke about, but it doesn't change the fact it held me captivated at the time. I enjoyed it then, and I enjoy it now as well. I guess in most cases I like what I like then, and everything else that I picked up on the way. I do think when it comes to that kind of stuff being an artist helps too. You tend to appreciate it more. I think people who forget the things they enjoyed as children and slag it off as garbage have a certain air of phoniness about them, and can be somewhat dull.

Thank you! Yeah I love the old classic comics. I feel that Scooby Doo owes a bit of it's look and feel to Archie, so I thought Shaggy being sort of a surrogate Jughead made perfect sense.

My point is, they often see Scooby Doo as a bit of a rip-off of the humorous Archie Teen-Group motif. I don't think they are being fair, but to some, Archie is a religion.
