Description Doctor Derek Bright is a founding member of Earth Corps. Codenamed Digger, Derek is an intellectual with a cool head and a dry sense of humor, Derek has refined tastes and is often the counter balance to hot tempered Earth Corps member Eddie Augutter.

Derek often reads self help books to improve himself and strives to better the technology he develops for Earth Corps. Standoffish and more at home underground or in a work shop Derek can be awkward around new people and seems snobbish.

Born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania Bright was a prodigy that became interested in engineering. Becoming a mining engineer after college Derek was involved in a mining accident that permanently injured his legs.

Unable to walk without the aid of a cane and unable to physically work in the mines again Derek threw himself into designing exploration suits that would better improve mining safety as well as give him the means to physically go back to the work he loved.

With the help of his friend and coworker Eddie Augutter the suits were built and became the main exploration tool used by Earth Corps. Finally given the ability to physically explore the earth’s crust again Derek has become Earth Corps resident inventor and designs all of their advance technology and vehicles.

During a mission to rescue humans abducted by the Inhumanoids, Derek saved actress/stuntwoman Stella Blaze who was being held hostage by a smitten Tendril. Instantly attracted to the fiery redhead, Derek dated and quickly married Stella despite interference by an angry Tendril on their wedding day.

Doctor Bright’s exploration suit is an electrically powered, computer assisted exoskeleton that is equipped with several offensive weapons and grants its wearer superhuman strength and durability.

The exploration suit has been tested to withstand concussive force of 50 lbs of TNT. Fully insulated and pressure regulated, the suit can withstand external temperature variations from –100 degrees to 4000 degrees Fahrenheit.

The suit’s large grappling claws can act like shovels and are capable of lifting 500 lbs. The claw’s serrated edges can tear or claw through virtually any substance including solid bedrock. The claws can fold back onto the forearms of the suit allowing hydraulic robotic hands to slide into place with the same dexterity as human ones but with much greater strength.

The helmet is equipped with a thick vision optimization plate that adjusts to infrared in pitch black and can adjust instantaneously to any level of light including blinding sunlight.

The chest of the suit contains a high speed computer that analyzes electronic and electro-chemical data and transfers information to the wearer in real time and connects to the processor and synthesizer contained in the suit’s “belt” This allows the wearer to convert one compound into another making fabrication of materials needed in the field possible.

I have to say, those robotic exo-suits the Earth Core wore were pretty huge compared to the wearers. And I have to question; how could one operate such huge bulky armored suits?

The same way deep sea divers use these in real life [link]

It’s a sealed environment suit on top of a motorized exoskeleton that responds to the wearers movements. Like the Iron Monger armor from the first Iron Man movie or those power suits the soldiers used in Avatar. It’s essentially like being inside a walking tank.

Oh I see... Well, thanks for clearing that up for me. That makes sense. And speaking of which, I had almost forgotten that in the 1986 Transformers movie, Spike and Daniel wear similar robotic exo-suits that operate similarly to the suits worn by the Earth Core. And I think they operate similarly to what you said about a motorized exoskeleton that responds to the wearer's movements.

Yeah, exactly! The only difference between the Spike and Daniel exo suits and the others is their suits can transform into wheeled land vehicles which makes sense considering who their friends are.

I'm sure Bright and Auger would love to incorporate some of that Cybertronian tech into their suits.

I'm pretty sure that's on the very long list of things Dr. Bright is no longer allowed to do.

After last time, yeah. I can agree with that statement.

Could you imagine if their suits had that ability to transform? It would've made them more awesome.

By the way, I saw a couple Inhumanoids episodes on YouTube. They were cool.

They were sort of doing that with modular attachments in the cartoon but because the cartoon only lasted one season things never got expanded upon.

I think had the series kept going they would have gone in a direction something like that since they started to introduce characters whose armor had some transformer type abilities.

Cool, the entire series is on DVD.

That's a shame. But then, that's why there's fanfic.

I'll have to keep an eye out for the DVD set then.

True but I sort of like that they didn't go the route of Transformers and have alt modes to their suits. It makes it that much more dramatic knowing these guys are stuck inside these bulky suits and have to make the best of it while fighting these giant hell beasts below the Earth's crust.

You can find the DVD set at www.rhino.com, Amazon.com or eBay.

If they did go that route, I can imagine they'd be viewed as trying to ripoff the more popular Transformers line, so yeah, good idea to keep them in regular suits.

I'll have to look the set up. Thanks for letting me know.

Yeah plus they were both made by Marvel/Sunbow and shared the same animated universe as GI Joe, Jem and Transformers so it wouldn't be out of the question that they might have done more with the suits abilities had the series gone on but we'll never know I guess.

I just ordered the complete 13 episode series set of Inhumanoids from the UK. I'll let you know how it is after I get it.

Thanks!

I want to do one of all the scientists, but it's slow going since nobody seems to want to send me scans of the backs of the packages so I can get the info I need.

Aww, that sucks. But I'm sure you will manage.

I might just make those ones shorter than the others until I can get all the info I need since I have all of them drawn and colored except Herc Armstrong's exploration suit. I'm redrawing that one since I wasn't happy with the original one I did.
