It began.
Ranshiin flew out of the building, Lea riding astride his back. He took her through the clouds to the open sky. The sun was shining bright upon them, and yet it knew not of its fate; never to be seen again by humankind, never to grace the ground with its rays. Ranshiin flew higher and higher, letting the power within him grow as the wind rushed past his wings. When he reached a suitable height, he turned and looked back at Lea. Her mind was set; there was no turning back.
"Lea, are you ready?" he asked her over the wind currents.
"As ready as I'll ever be!" she called back.
"You know what to do."
Nodding, Lea closed her eyes, focusing. The patchwork Ranshiin had done on her empathy was truly amazing. She could now use it however she wanted without any pain to her mind; she could choose to feel emotions that weren't her own. Not only that, but she could harness her power in order to effectively scramble the minds of millions, which was exactly what Ranshiin needed her to do.
While reaching out with her mind, she could see into the minds of everyone; every living thing on the planet was subject to her gaze. For one brief moment, Lea was god.
And then it happened. Every terrible memory, every painful sensation, senseless agony, ravaged the minds of the masses. They couldn't function, it was impossible. She could see flashes; a baby crying out…a man lying on the floor, his head in his hands…a woman screaming…a child looking up at her…dogs barking, animals going haywire…Lea saw it all. And that was when Ranshiin moved in. With his power coupled with hers, they effectively killed off two-thirds of the human race, silencing their screams as easily as one would snuff out a candle. They had died from their own pain, making their hearts stop in mid-beat.
Ranshiin laughed; it was too easy. Lea, too, couldn't help but feel satisfied with her handiwork. She slowly retracted from the collective consciousness and retreated into her own mind. Her job was done; now it was Ranshiin's turn. She saw him gather his energy together; it was magnificent. The wind whirled around them, lightning flashed in the sky, thunder roared so loudly that the ground below trembled. It truly was a requiem. The clouds moved in, blocking out the sun and turning the sky dark. Lea watched in awe as a single mass of energy, full of absolute power, began to form at the tips of his fingers, creating the tool of humanity's destruction. When Ranshiin reached his peak, he released it.
As the ball fell, shockwaves of epic proportions took place all over the world. As it hit the ocean, gargantuan waves rolled, and the very forces of nature were released. Fire rained from the heavens, entire countries were blackened and cracked in two by the rumblings of the earth, and buildings in even the largest cities were brought to the ground in an effortless show of brutality. All too soon it was over. Lea reached out again, feeling for the collective. Only 8% of the world's original population remained; the rest had died in the process.

Shiron and Shuu had felt the waves. They knew it was coming, and they raced to beat the death, destruction, and chaos. As Shiron flew them to Colorado, Shuu expanded his conscious to take a count of how many remained. He was breathless…only a few small fragments had survived, making the human race the absolute minority on the planet; only 6000 people had survived the destruction.
The valleys and canyon began to come into view. Shiron looked up to see the setting sun be slowly devoured by the dark clouds setting in.
Shuu could feel his anger, and he patted his back.
"Don't worry, Shiron," he said, watching the lightning in the distance. "We'll make it right."
They dipped into the Grand Canyon, lost to view.
