Description (UPDATED) - I had the images flipped when I originally posted this. I've fixed it. Sorry about that, to any of you who suffered headaches, hair-loss, or bleeding from the ears.

This is a pseudo-3D image. To see the 3D effect, hold your head 1 to 2 feet from your screen, perfectly level with the image. Then cross your eyes fairly far and you should see 4 frames (2 and 2) - vary how crossed your eyes are until the two middle frames overlap exactly and spring into sharp focus; the overlay image should look 3D!! If you have trouble, save the image to your hard drive and open it so it's the only thing on your screen (sometimes surrounding clutter makes it harder to get your eyes crossed properly)

When I look at this picture it makes me want to whack my head repeatedly against my keyboard. In a good way.

For information on how to create these, see: [link]

Model is Carly Champagne. Lighting is one large octodome (high right) and a small softbox (low right)

Well, if yours get stuck, you'll make medical history! They'll probably name a syndrome after you! FAME!

These are always really cool, I never seem to be able to get my eyes to focus 100% on them, but still good non the less.

Great work!!!

I saw the 3D effect, but I was not able to see the image perfectly focused (it was a little blurred).
So I used Gimp to decrease the distance between two frames until (magically) the image appeared sharper!

I don't know if I am the only one having this problem...

Hay,here's a tip for anyone having a hard time crossing their eyes far or long enough. When i was trying to cross my eyes with this picture, i could only get as far as getting her hand and foot to touch, so after 30 minutes i had an idea.....Lightly push on the outer corner of your eye leads to help them cross and BOOM, you have 3D.

Very cool how you got this frames, I mean your slide bar. I just copy an image in photoshop and place it beside the original, then I move it a little bit and that's how it works too. Now what is your installation for if it's working with one frame in photoshop too?

Great shot anyways, good work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mjranum In reply to ReachingFlames [2010-02-18 21:07:10 +0000 UTC]

Did you look at the full tutorial on my website? I guess you must have.

If you do the copy/image technique what you're doing is relying on the brain to create the effect of depth cues using other cues (size of feet smaller: must be farther away!) whereas if you look at the two sides of the picture you can see the effect of parallax. It is greater when you are closer to your target. Try closing one eye, then the other, and you can see all the effects of parallax pretty clearly. It just makes the illusion a bit better.

Lemme go check your gallery; I'm curious to see how your shots look. Our brains are amazing at fooling us!

ReachingFlames In reply to mjranum [2010-02-18 21:20:35 +0000 UTC]

Exactly as I was thinking, it just makes the illusion a but better.

I'm not having any stereoscopic images in my gallery, I only make the stereoscopics for myself, hehe. But please, look at it anyways! I can always use critic.

mjranum In reply to ReachingFlames [2010-02-18 22:17:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I just checked. I like the creative take in your gallery. You look like an experimenter! Do you have a tripod? Try doing a 3d by just carefully moving your camera, and see the difference. Or just put your camera on something stable that you can slide it 4" on.

ReachingFlames In reply to mjranum [2010-02-18 22:29:39 +0000 UTC]

Indeed I am! I'm trying to see all the corners in photography yes I'm owning a tripod, I'm definitely going to try stereoscopic shots like you are doing. Too bad not many people get the trick with crossing their eyes hehe..

Thanks for looking!

mjranum In reply to ReachingFlames [2010-02-18 22:52:16 +0000 UTC]

There's a way you can build a viewer for stereographs (see:
[link]
)

I keep meaning to make one of these that goes in a box with a white lucite top (to let light in) so it'd be easy to see.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ReachingFlames In reply to mjranum [2010-02-18 23:51:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I've seen viewers like that in the Dali museum. Very cool, thank you for the link, maybe I'll be making one someday!

Stereoscopy is something that should get much more attention. And I mean stereoscopy like this. I just hate the red - blue glasses, I can't enjoy looking at an image like that...

ReachingFlames In reply to mjranum [2010-02-19 10:31:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh I know that one too. But I would like to make my own installation for other people to see stereoscopic, like in the other article. Thank you for linking anyways, I could always use it

Awesome 3D stuff. I've been using a Loreo 3D lens (the viewer works on our camera) but the optical quality is not nearly as good as what you're getting. On the upside, I *can* do 3D video.

I'm going to have to try the slide bar method you've illustrated.

mjranum In reply to instantexpert [2009-05-22 15:29:28 +0000 UTC]

The slide bars are really really easy! Just make sure the lighting is consistent. Obviously they don't work for moving subjects.
