Description My second attempt at retired NBA basketball player Michael Jordan.
I wasn't satisfied with my first b&w drawing which didn't turn out how I wanted it to. I was originally planning to do this drawing last year but couldn't fit it in.
This is my return to using pens after not using them for the last 4 drawings. I also used color pencils and tried to blend both together. The concept was to draw a colored full body of MJ in mid air in the middle and draw facial expressions of him fading into the background. The background color blue was to portray the sky as he was well known to look like he was flying when attempting a layup or dunk.
I spent alot of time on the detail on his skin especially on the versions in blue. I haven't done this very much so it was interesting to do.
This looks much lighter when compared to my earlier NBA drawings. I didn't use felt tip pen markers for this one so that could explain it.
This is probably going to be my last basketball related drawing for now.

A4 size paper.
Color ball point pens and color pencils.
Completed in around 4 weeks but I'm unsure of the hours.
Full view is recommended.

Thanks! No the only pencil I used was a HB pencil to draw the outlines at the beginning. Everything else was all colors.
If you are referring to the b&w drawing of Jordan I might have. But I can't remember as it's a few years back!

For outlines of drawings I use a H9 pencil. This is from a set of 12 Derwent graphic pencils. I hardly use the others as I don't do b&w pencil drawings anymore!

The colors are a combination of WHSmith branded color pencils and color ball point pens.

I'm not sure as I don't know the shops in your area. The only place I can think of is a online website.

I checked and unfortunately it's a uk website that delivers only in the uk. (www.whsmith.co.uk.)

You could possibly try a website like ebay or look for any art supplies websites and see if they have what you are looking for there. Cos I'm in the uk usually when I look online they provide me with mainly uk websites. I'm sure when you look online they would provide you with websites different to mine.

i like how you take your time to complete each work. brilliant in the techniques and how his faces looks glossy nice cool background colours for the faces.

Maybe you can choose reference at certain angles like from the bottom or top to show more dynamic movement. keep up the good work! ^^

Thanks! Trust me I looked at ref pics for ages before deciding on which ones to draw! I used all my ref pics from magazines so chances are there must have been better ones I probably missed.

icic, from what you just said i agree it's harder to get the desired pose reference for our subject matter since he is a sports icon and you can't get him to pose for you. you do very nicely with the resources you have still ^^

Your first one was a different style. Black and white and the placing of the pics was different. I really liked the face you drew there. The way it was in contrast to everything else.

Sometimes I feel like I don't improve. I notice that on my BoA drawings. I can get it right but I can also mess up. I wonder if it's based on who I'm drawing.
