Description Done for my decorative illustration class, it’s Cadmus! You may or may not remember Cadmus from [link] , as the shadowy figure dissolving into birds. I should probably mention that Cadmus, being of the vampire species, is supposed to look freakishly spidery and long of limb.

The skeletons at the top of the border are of a vampire (left) and a human (right). Note the differences between the species. In Cadmus’ world, vampires are a living species of shape-shifters, separate from human beings. They use their shape shifting skills most typically for hunting. However, vampires have also developed a bit of a complex after living around human beings. They use their shifting abilities to make themselves look as lovely as possible-- shortening their limbs, adjusting their teeth, eyes and faces, hiding their extra fingers and toes-- even when in the sole presence of other vampires. Cadmus finds the act of adjusting his teeth to be unbearably uncomfortable, so he simply doesn’t do it. Therefore, you’ll never catch him grinning...that is, unless you’re about to die.

Poor vampires, demons and other creatures of the night, they always must sit on the very tops of everything XDDD That must be developing quite some leg-muscle XDDD Mm, somebody's cooking something yummy there (the green smoke XDDDDD) and he looks like he kinda likes the smell of it XDDD

No, sorry for my funny interpretations X3 This is a great picture, so well composed and so ornate, symbolic I'd say :3 Wish we had it for interpratation in our textbook back in high-school instead of some lame classics XDDD <3

*grch* You and your talent to spook me >_<
And all the wonderful details - the skeletons are great - and I'm fine with them being legless ... *shivers* but the blood on the plevis bone ... ? I can ignore the blood on the trees ... or in the snow ... but that one?

I guess I'll find those 'doom trees' of yours just around the corner, huh?
But I really love the fact that your art can make me react like that

Oooh of course I love his hair but I also really like the languid green mist! It's gorgeously done, and doesn't get lost in the dark parts of the background. Nice job!

Love love love the skeletons! Did I ever mention I have a thing for bones? They're like natural sculptures. I like the subtle differences between the two species.

One of my friends spent her first date with her boyfriend over a box of bones. She had access to them because she's a med student, so when she heard he had a thing for bones, she borrowed a set from the lab and brought it to their date. Clearly, it won him over.

LOL! It would win me over!

One of the less torturous activities we had to do in my comparative vertebrate anatomy lab was reassemble an entire cat skeleton from a jumbled box of bones. Ours had two left humeruses (humeri?)... O_o

It looks awesome and a bit creepy at the same time. I love, how the wind is blowing his hair. I tried to find difference between the two skeletons, but I could see only, that the eye-sockets are different.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MNat In reply to laoan [2010-05-06 10:55:29 +0000 UTC]

Most of the differenences are fairly subtle: the length of the arms, the size of the hands, the over-all size difference...the biggest differences are in the skull. The size of the bottom jaw of the vampire is larger, the hinge in the back is stronger, and the cranium is more elongated. The vampire's teeth are much longer and as you noted, the eye sockets are different shapes. Also, the vampire has more of a protruding lower half of the face, due to the large lower jaw and long teeth

What you can't really see is that the vampire has six fingers on each hand instead of five, but the hands are so massive that they're able to wrap around a human skull.

Nos for raaaa tuuuu!

Oh yeah. I tried to go classic on the vampires in "Carpe Noctem"; return them to their awesome, morbid roots...with a few twists, of course We must redeem them from the ridiculous tweeny stupidity they have been recently reduced to!

I have a few friends who are mad Pratchett fangirls, but I haven't read any of his books myself. I do have two favorite unique portrayals of vampires from other books through. The darkangels from Meredith Ann Pierce's Darkangel trilogy and the Drakhouls from Sarah Ash's Tears of Artamon provide truly unique portayals.

It's nice to read a wide variety of books, since you can find interesting and different views on all sorts of things.
And then you get something like ... Twilight. It's a shame to admit it but some views, and thoughts, just aren't worth taking the time to understand since we, as mortals, have a limited amount of time we can spend.

First of all, your vampire species idea is totally awesome and very original, and second, I REALLY like this guy (but I have such an obvious thing for long flowing red hair, that shouldn't come as a surprise ). I love the two skeletons on the top of the frame as well.

Red-heads: a fatal weakness!

I'm glad you find my version of Vampires novel. I wanted to blend the oldworld myths with some fantasy stuff, and I'm truly desperate to get away from the campy-highschool drama that seems to have infected the genre. x.x

temiel In reply to MNat [2010-04-30 14:04:19 +0000 UTC]

I have to admit a certain fondness for vampires as a creature, much less for the angst and tweeny romance. (When done well, of course, it's good; but when it's bad, it's REALLY bad. ) SO it is indeed refreshing to see someone take the concept and do something totally different with it.

Evil green clouds done in pastel! Whoo!

This was supposed to be a halloween-inspired piece for decorative illustration, so i thought the noxious, unhealthy green looked right. Especially with the red
