Description

HG-64/Z 'Hellfire' Gunship as used by the Escean Military. Updated.

Year of Service Entry: 2094.

An element of Escea’s Airborne Renewal Program, the Hale Gunship - 64 /Zulu – also known as the ‘Hellfire’ – is the primary attack VTOL used by the Escean military. Commissioned in 2088 and introduced in 2094, the Hellfire replaced the HG-60/M ‘Firebird’ in Escea’s ‘Terrestrial Triangle’, the Army, Navy and Marine Corps branches operating on Earth. Smaller, lighter and faster than its predecessor, the Hellfire is also equipped with a larger array of weaponry and more advanced avionics.

The Hellfire was developed as a counter to Rotha’s Z-41/B ‘Dragonfly’, which outperformed the Firebird in terms of firepower. Hale Aerospace met the requirements put forward by the Escean military by outfitting the Hellfire with a helmet-guided, tri-weapon turret that integrates a 25mm Gatling cannon with a pair of 11mm models, with the option to switch between the weapons or fire simultaneously. The stub wing systems of the VTOL were designed to accept six pylons and a number of weapon systems. These include racks of AGM-159 ‘Mohawk’ anti-tank missiles or 14-round FFAR Honeycomb rocket pods. In addition to these, the Hellfire was equipped with six pylons on its main wings to carry AIM-21 ‘Whiplash’ air-to-air missiles. At full load, the Hellfire can carry up to 1500x rounds of 25mm, 2000x rounds of 11mm, 6x AIM-21 AA Missiles, and 140x 2.75-inch Folding Fin Aerial Rockets, 24x AGM-159 AT Missiles or 6x KP-4D 30mm Gun Pods with 500x rounds each.

One of the unique features of this aircraft is its ability to transport up to three personal in a rear compartment, either for emergency extraction or for fast and heavily armed infiltration by SOF personnel.

Primary propulsion is supplied by Pyotr-H BX85 Thrust Vectoring Turbofans, which are an identical but smaller model of those fitted to the HVT/A-32 ‘Thundersnow’ capable of pushing the VTOL in the realm of high-subsonic flight. The exhaust nozzles of these engines are capable of manoeuvring downward to provide vertical takeoff, working in tandem with a tail-mounted Direct Jet Thruster. The DJT also provides additional control in flight. The Hellfire has a retractable tricycle undercarriage.

Hellfire VTOLs carry a powerful ECM package to defend against guided weapon systems, as well as pyrotechnic countermeasures to help confuse heatseeking weaponry. An artificial assistant program is included to reduce workload on the pilot and to aid control of the aircraft when attention is focused upon the weapon systems. The AA system helps to protect the aircraft from electronic attacks as well, while composite ballistic materials and aluminium oxynitride windows increase survivability from physical impacts. Like other Escean aircraft, a collimated display is projected across the windshield to provide the pilot with a variety of information regarding his aircraft and the locations of friendly or enemy units. This windshield can also polarise against harsh sunlight or become opaque entirely for night operations. Haptic flight controls controlled by CIT or SST cards are also installed in addition to physical backups.

More or less fills the niche. More heavily armed, though.

I'm wanting to use this for the my NationStates FT as a Trans-Atmospheric Gunship designed to work both in atmosphere and in space for attacking enemy positions and starships. Also I'd like to replace the K-2G Gatling Cannon with my FT's standard Gatling Laser, to maintain the link with the rest of my units in the FT, and the turbofans would be replaced with plasma thrusters as well. I will credit you, of course.

So long as it is credited, you have my permission. This is for a potential commercial project so that's a must, and the image itself cannot be modified.

where are the gun pods?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MOAB23 In reply to bluebaby4 [2014-10-22 05:08:28 +0000 UTC]

Gun pods are an optional alternative that would replace the rocket pods, three per wing. Another alternative would be racks of AT missiles, three per wing, four per rack.

Those are max load outs for particular weapon types, of course. You could mix and match depending on requirements. Only constant with a Hellfire is the tri-turret and the AA missiles.

VTOLs like this are a little easier, but trying to draw up a larger aircraft, like my HA-30, is a real headache.

My plan is to create a modification to the old Apache helicopters to turn them into a VTOL Attack Vehicle that uses new high powered hybrid air breathing rocket engines for its propulsion to fight through a Stargate or be stored in large numbers

caiobrazil [2013-09-07 17:43:41 +0000 UTC]

awesome!

though as someone mentioned before, having a gunner would make the aircraft much more capable. not only making full advantage of sensors;

while the pilot takes care of flying and firing the unguided rockets, as well the Air-to-air missiles for self-defense, the gunner delivers accurate fire with the 20mm cannon and guided air-to-ground weaponry such as smart bombs and AT/TV missiles.

if you want the pilot to use that cannon, he will probably crash the aircraft while trying to aim (because that seems to be mounted in a mobile position rather than a fixed one), even if it is helmet-guided (unless your pilots are Ninjas who graduated at Chuck Norris University, of course)

i understand that you would need to make significant changes to adopt a Tandem configuration, but i have another idea: if you expand the sides of the cockpit area just a little, you can have a side-by-side confguration. the Su-34 Fullback uses it and it works very well.

i'm just saying so becuase, really, there is no point in having a cannon in a rotating mount and that array of targeting systems and sensors if you don't have a gunner. an attack helicopter/whateverthisthingis is pointless if you don't have a gunner. if you're not having a gunner, you might as well go A-10 style, gives you better speed and survivability.

please don't get me wrong though, it is an awesome design and i like it. i just don't understand how in earth can something like this be effective in a single-seat configuration, and what would be its advantages over a 2-seat configuration.

MOAB23 In reply to caiobrazil [2013-09-07 18:05:40 +0000 UTC]

Most aircraft/vehicles/suits in this universe use an AA or Artificial Assistant, which is somewhat similar to the VIs in Mass Effect. Usually the pilot keeps the gun fixed forward for firing (like a Blackshark) or sets it to traverse in a 90-degree front wedge only. But if he wants to fire it to the side he can toggle flight control over to the AA, which responds to voice commands and acts like a very advanced autopilot, to the point of offering tactical advice and plotting courses around obstacles, avoiding fire etc. The AA could actually fly the aircraft completely for the pilot while he focuses on weapons, either using the gun or marking targets, so he only really has to handle one aspect at a time.

Hmm. Can only think of Warhawk or the Orca from the original Command and Conquer. Most of the design was inspired by CNC3 and Avatar with various real world helos thrown into the mix. Cobra, Apache, Blackhawk, Hind, Black Shark.

ArmamentDawg [2013-04-12 02:51:07 +0000 UTC]

Interesting design. It'll help to have a copilot/gunner to take full advantage of the gunship's sensors and guided weapons capability, allowing the pilot to focus on flying.

By the way, why make it a biplane instead of simply mounting the rocket pods under the main wing, as the air-to-air missiles are? Are either set of wings retractable?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MOAB23 In reply to ArmamentDawg [2013-04-12 16:02:30 +0000 UTC]

Upper wings fold in by the engine bays for storage and transport. They're the main flight control surface, with the air-to-air missiles taking up the excess space. Bottom set are just weapon stub wings.
