Star Sapphire was called out to use his Future Vision for Grey diamond and he brought along Jasper and Agate due to Amethyst being out for an assignment he had given her. Agate has Citrine monitors assigned to her from White Diamond to ensure that she kept her vow of silence.

While Star was with Grey diamond a few of the higher court gems were mocking Star for collecting 'defective' gems as he does. Agate didn't care when they insulted all of the gems that that knew of that were under Sapphire's care, including herself, but when the insults became worse about Star, reaching the point of even staying he'd be shattered like the gems he saved, Agate broke her promise.

Without Star's permission, Agate stepped to the gems and defended Star. She told them of all the things that he had done for the defect gems, and told them a thing or two about where they could shove certain things. She didn't realize until her head cleared what she had done. She was taken before White Diamond when Sapphire came out and she was reported by the Citrines. Star was in disbelief, but he could do nothing.

The agreement was he would be shattered with her, but Grey Diamond decided he was too important at the moment. His punishment was revised that he would live and remember how he failed the gem that he had saved. He could have used his future vision. He should have known that this would happen. Grey Diamond thought it was more fun that way.

He has a room where he keeps all of his 'Broken Promises'. Full of gems that he couldn't save and brought Agate to the room. He cried over the gem, having held it all in until the moment he reached his Sanctuary, and assured her that she wouldn't get lonely. She has brothers and sisters to bond with, so she should rest easy, and everything would be fine even without her.
