When this face greets you first thing in the morning the world is a little bit brighter.ΒThis little guy and his siblings are wild foxes that live at the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas. The last few summers have been enhanced by the juvenile foxes I encounter that are born on property. They have 180 acres in which to run and play and I get immense pleasure when I catch a glimpse of them peeking at me from behind a rock or some shrubs. They are pretty fast so I have to have a fast focus finger to get a clear shot before they are gone from sight.

Just a quick peek from the shrubs before he was off again. My young foxes are almost grown up and their parents have taken away from their den area and deeper into the desert where they will continue to learn how to live on their own.

Haha, thank you so much! I heard this little one scurrying about in the brush before his sweet face popped up above me. They love to eat the spiny lizards and snakes they can catch so maybe he was practicing his hunting skills before mom came home. These little guys give me just enough time to pop off a shot or two before darting off again so it's always a thrill to encounter them in the wild.

Thank you very much! I always look forward to this time of the year when the kits have grown big enough to be out and about. They have more curiosity at this age so, I if I'm lucky, I can see them peeking at me before disappearing into the rocks or brush.

Is it a desert-y sort of environment over there?

Oh yes! Las Vegas is located in the Mojave Desert which is the driest desert in N. America so the animals that live here are true survivors. These particular foxes happen to make their home at the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas, which is kind of like a little desert oasis complete with two major museums, botanical gardens, and trails with a focus on sustainability. Restoration efforts at the Springs Preserve began in 2000 and have involved cleanup, importing topsoil, recontouring land surfaces, propagating and planting native plants, seeding and irrigating. Can you tell that I work there? J

I wish! I love fennec foxes! These are gray foxes native to both North and South America and are the only foxes I have ever seen in the Las Vegas area.
