My entree for Thrushes contest!  


The character depicted here is my Kitsune Kuroa; ( kennedoe.deviantart.com/art/Ku… ) 
I have always ALWAYS wanted to draw a Jersey Devil. they're likely my favorite cryptid out there~ before now I never had an excuse to do so. BUT NOW I DO  
I will say though, doing lighting from behind was far more difficult than I'd anticipated, especially with a medium I'm not used to ;w; I have to practice a lot more with acrylics she's supposed to look white, lit from behind... now she just looks extra blue XD but oh well. The rocks and tails turned out  nicely at least~ 

and yay for showers of ashes! haha!

OMG.

   

Wow. This is incredible. You've captured the lighting really really well--at first I totally thought this was digital until I was able to take a closer look! That sky--wow. Most people would paint just solid blue (I probably would be one of them xD) but you've got this really nice blue-to-black, emphasizing the glow of the moon. BRILLIANT. You didn't have to make an overly-glowy halo around the moon to give the impression that it's glowy. I love that. ANDANDAND.... You did a really fantastic job for the back lighting. It really is difficult but you totally nailed it. Plus, the blue actually looks really good. The brain tricks us into seeing things as white when they are not painted that way. It's really cool  But I digress.......I think he looks amazing with that white sortof halo of highlights around the edges. And the translucent wings...... AHHH I love that part. 

Last but not lease THOSE ROCKS. Holy hell those are some sexy rocks. I mean... wow. They are just perfect. Kudos to you for the amazing acrylic painting, I just cannot do acrylics... they do not like me :T  Anyways IT IS AWESOME, a truly fabulous entry, OMG I HOPE YOU WINNNNNNNNN

aaaauuuugh so AWESOME.  First thing I'm drawn to is the eyes, they are so piercing they make you stop to look a little longer!  You are so good with eyes!  I also really like the lighting, the idea of the full moon providing the grayish-blueish light, that is quite a feat to pull off!  I've always loved moon light, it looks so ghostly and otherworldly. The color color theme is well done, in fact.  I also like the multiple tails with one main tail, and also the towering rocks in the background.

So very few people paint moonlight, I can imagine why, it must be really hard to get the colors right.  But they always look so beautiful! I'm so glad you did the mooonlight in this.

YES!! *explodes into tendrils of bloodied happiness-imbued rainbows*

it most certainly is! though I know of plenty of people who do it better lol
but unique lighting is something I think would benefit a lot of artists to try, especially the ones that rely on filters to do it :c it's a good skill after all!

Well I need to stop whining about my sub par lighting abilities and just practice it, lol.  But each time I try, I feel like I first need to practice and improve anatomy.  Because propery lighting is so hard with bad anatomy!

perhaps try practicing with shapes first :3 that's what I had to do in class. 
then incorporate them into things with anatomy afterwards so you won't have to worry about the anatomy being off on a cylinder XD because trust me, I do the same thing ALL the time
like "dang, this leg would have some fabulous lighting...
IF IT LOOKED LIKE A LEG"
and then no work gets done lol

spheres and cubes are far more forgiving lol

Awww but shapes are boring!  But yeah I realize that is what any art class would start a beginner with...cylinders, spheres, and rectangles.  It just seems so plain and blah, you know?  Buuuuuuut improvement is improvement.

XD I dunno, you can always go cracked out insane and do some dodecagonal figures or something nuts each level up = 2 more sides
