Having lived completely alone for the better part of almost 20 years, Ret can - in a word - be described as awkward. He often comes off as standoffish and blunt, but it isn't with the intention of being hard or rude. He's just forgotten his manners!
...Sometimes on purpose.
When it comes down to it, Ret is a goodhearted curio with (mostly) good intentions - but a past filled with loss and his own self-imposed exile have made him a hard curio to get along with, and even harder to get to know.
