Description
This was actually my favorite of all the birds, just for his personality. He loves attention, and at every noise he would twist his head around to find the source of the noise. It was really amusing. Plus, I think Barn Owls are exceptionally cute. <3

Name: I am unsure of this one's name; the Raptor Club did not have any information on him up on their website, and I can't remember his name for the life of me.
Sex: Male

Scientific Name: Tyto alba
Reason for Being Captive: This guy's problem is purely mental. He's perfectly healthy physically, but his nest was knocked over when he was a baby, and he was found by some people walking through the woods. None of his siblings survived, but he grew up at first with a family who had a little girl that liked to hold him and play with him. He imprinted on her, so when the Raptor Club got him, he was completely attached to humans. We're pretty sure he doesn't even think himself an owl anymore.

Barn Owls can be found throughout North America, though more in the drier, warmer climates, because for some reason they don't seem to be able to sit on their legs so they don't freeze. Their heart-shaped facial disks enable them to hear exceptionally well; there have been experiments done where these owls have been put in totally dark conditions, and they still found and caught a mouse released in the area. They also have the greatest range of vocalization, and that, coupled with their completely silent flight, have made them into a "ghost", of sorts. They eat small rodents, and are very picky about their food source, and will sometimes starve rather than hunt anything else. Given that, and that they need quite a lot to keep them and their young full, they are prized as keen pest controllers.

The Raptor Club at WSU only keeps birds that can not be released in the wild. Every single one of their birds are handicapped in some way, whether it be mental or physical.
