This is quite possibly the cutest little bird you will ever see ever. The moment they took her out of her crate every single girl went "awwah!". Heart String # 38: Pulled.
heh Also, she's afraid of hands. Which, as I'm sure you could imagine, makes caring for her a little difficult.

Name: Cuare
Sex: Female
Species: Northern Saw-Whet Owl
Scientific Name: Aegolius acadicus
Reason for Being Captive: Cuare was, very sadly, attacked by a cat. The bacteria in a cat's mouth is deadly for these tiny owls, and most end up dying after being bitten. Cuare was lucky enough to live, though the bite damaged the nerves and muscles in her right wing and she can no longer fly effectively. (Heart String #40: Pulled.) Once again, the Raptor Club thought she was a male, hence the name Cuare, but some blood work proved her to be female.

Saw-Whet Owls are the fourth smallest owls in North America. (And in my opinion, the most adorable.) They are named for their voice, which sounds like "whetting"--the sharpening of a saw. They live in coniferous forests and nest in woodpecker cavities, hunting insects, small rodents and occasionally bats and other birds. They're glutinous, too, and will often hunt and eat more than they can handle, caching the food they can't finish; a few are found now and then dead, having choked on their food. Juveniles have dark wings and heads with cream-colored chests, and they retain this coloring until they are a year old. These birds also have feathers down to their toes to keep them warm.

The Raptor Club at WSU only keeps birds that can not be released in the wild. Every single one of their birds are handicapped in some way, whether it be mental or physical.
