Well, I wanted to try painting something since I've been doing vectors like crazy. I guess it turned out all right. I suppose I'll keep trying to do stuff like this, maybe I'll be half-decent at it someday.Related content

Lovin' the sky, though they make me think a bunch more of fireflies than stars for the most part. Interesting take, putting the Mare in the Moon on the white part instead of the dark, it made me think for a bit before I actually saw it on the white.
So, does this take place before the pilot then?
Also, what kinda backstory does Moongaze have, other than, well, gazing at the moon? What's she hoping to do? Someday go up there? Someday meet Luna?

Yeah, I went a bit crazy on the stars, but I figured hey, it's a picture of a magical unicorn, why not?
I suppose it's before the show. I don't really want to affiliate my character with the characters and events that occur in the show; too many people do that and it gets old. But yes, I suppose this scene would have taken place before the show since the "mare in the moon" is still apparent.
As for backstory, nope, all she does is sit there and stare at the moon. lol not really. She is an astronomy pony. She runs an observatory and is pretty much a nightowl. Perhaps someday she might meet Luna. I haven't really fleshed out an actual story for her. Dunno if I will.

Alright, alright. Yeah, I figured her mark would mean astronomy or something like that, makes more sense than her talent being "stargazing", that doesn't have many applications. She'd get along well with Luna, I think.
Heh, sorry for trying to shove the timeline and canon into everything. Very nice pic, either way. I also quite like the grass in it. I can tell some of it's copy/pasted (I'm pretty sure, at least), but there's enough difference in the gradients to hide that.

How u do teh shiney? Love the stars, wish I could do that kind of stuff. Also, probably the first OC that I can stand, mostly because all the others are just there for self insertion fanfics involving lovey dovey bullshit with one of the main characters.

heheh, I hear ya. I am not really into injecting my character into the main story. I much rather create my own totally original stories and characters based in the MLP universe.
As for the stars, they are pretty easy. I usually do a combination of from-scratch stars and a mixture of star brushes I've created in the past and/or downloaded. Then I just tweak and modify the crap out of it until I am more or less content. I sat there for like two hours fiddling with the brightness trying to decide if I liked it more with a brighter or darker background.

I created a basic shape I wanted the hair "pieces" to look like. The blue hair was a flat dark blue shape, while the silver hair was a flat gray shape. I created two layers over that, one for basic shading and one for highlights, to give it some shape.
I then used a 1 pixel brush and drew a bajillion hair strands on a couple different layers above those, one for light hairs and one for dark.
I then made a few more layers and added in more highlights, shading, and color as needed.
