Description Hey Everyone!!
Here is the new card I've made for this project about Swiss Flora and Fauna: A little extra project about Swiss Nature

First of all, I'd like to thank my good friend for her help. She's an expert in bats (she's currently working for them and with them) and she gave me the missing information I couldn't find on the internet (can you believe that?), that is to say their wingspan and lifespan... so, my dear Omoidenoki, this little card is dedicated to you, a tribute to your help and kindness

The Alpine Long-Eared Bat ("Oreillard des Alpes" in French) is a lovely little moth-eating bat, an a relatively new species, since it was described and named only in 2002! before, it was thought to be a subspecies of the brown long-eared bat. It has been named "Alpine" because it was "discovered" and described there, but some of these cuties have been found in the Pyrenees, in Corsica, some places in Greece, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, too.

About the drawing: I kept the information in beige like all the other pictures on this page (the pages are color-coded: pink for big animals, blue for tiny ones, beige for fast ones, and other colors for strange categories like "surprising", "colorful",...

I wouldn't mind having a pack of these bats come over and take care of the moths I get flying around the outdoor lights.

Mostly fruit bats. We never get vampire bats where I live in America and there are some places here where they do reside if my memory is correct.

thank you so much!!

Omoidenoki told me the usual lifespan for a bat in this family is between 20 and 30 years... so I went for the average line...
But indeed, I would have thought, spontaneously, the same age as dogs, for example...

wotawota and MoonyMina

Bats are exception among little mamals, they are studied for this particularity. Researchers have discovered their chromosomas are specials, refreshing some parts of them increase their lifespan compare to others little animals (this is a very short version but if you are interested you can look for telomera and bats on the internet).
As they only have one baby per year, they need to have a long lifespan too to balance this poor population increasing.
But to be honest, old bats are rare in nature, we can see its age by looking their teeth and it's rare to find bats with very ruined theeth....but sometimes it's a surprise.
The know oldest bat was 46 years old, it was a pipistrelle

But it's cool to think that the ones who live next to my home can be the same ones over several years makes me smile!
