Ok, so here we go. I. Did. A. BACKGROUND!!!!!!
I know, holy crap, isnt it amazing. Well, it's a very basic one, but I think it came out nicely.

Seren Pedac, guiding clients through the snowy wilderness. Is it Udinaas and crew? Who knows...but she DOES have a sword given to her by a special someone...

Great, I love ow you realised her hair and the fur on her cloak.
But the ear makes her look a bit like an elve or fairy...

Very nice work! I'm particularly impressed by the sword. I wish I could paint them so well

Haha, yay, a real background.

Seriously though, I think it came out fine. It falls back away from the character, making her stand out more as the focal presence. Really FINE work with the sword as well. The metalic shine on the hilt is considerably nice. Good effort with the hair as well.

thanks, although as I mentioned above to someone else, I used heavy referencing for the sword, from `Elandria 's stock image. It taught me a bit though, and hopefully I'm closer to painting something like that from scratch for next time. I still couldnt paint a blade like you can
I'm actually rather chuffed with the hair. I'm trying to move away from trying to make hair too realistic, so I'm going for a more painted look, while still being realistic enough, if that makes any sense.

Aye, it does.

And practice makes perfect with drawing blades. I feel I've come a long way when it comes to their details, in just the last half a year.

To be honest, it's a lot easier to understand Trull's affection for her now when I have a visual. The books depict her...I don't know, not so good-looking I guess..

Nice piece you've got there, keep 'em coming!

One of the very few things I DONT like about Erikson is the fact that he doesnt describe his characters well, if at all. I've read all the books and I have clear images of only a few in my mind. Seren, well, I couldnt find a description of her, and I looked through Reapers Gale and couldnt find one at all.

So, this is more my imagination than anything else, but it's how I see her.

Close enough

But yea, I'd really love more descriptions from him...

Thanks, adding some blue and green highlights, and some red and purple shadows to the hair seems to have worked well. This background was really simple to paint, but we all have to take baby steps

the colouring is very effective. she looks like a very strong character :3

Backgrounds like these enhance the pic. The focus isn't on the background but it just adds to the overall pic. I would love to be able to do those epic scenic landscape shots, with like sweeping hills/highlands with a castle in the background. >_< first i need to get a tablet

I agree, tablets are very essential after a while. It gave my art such a boost it's not funny. I know of some amazing artists that are so much better than me who use a mouse, but I wouldnt want to. Just the thought makes me think 'eww'

And yes, I think Seren is a very strong character, I'm happy I managed to convey that

WOW! This is you in your element... her hand and the sword are scarily real!!!... and nice background too... wowy...

Morgalahan In reply to littlefluffie [2009-03-16 11:31:13 +0000 UTC]

hehe, thanks, although the 'reality' of the hand and the sword are mainly due to referencing `Elandria 's stock image very heavily. But I learned a lot about painting them in the process, which is the entire point of using stock at the moment

Hey, ultimately, you were the one who put the paint on canvas (so to say) so don't feel any less for referencing... its only those supercrazy genius artists with social disorders that can create perfect pictures from the get go out of their heads, but they usually are institutionalised by age 30. Luckily you are a normal artist who uses a bit of referencing to get a picture through

hahaha, yeah, you're right there. I'm learning the joys of painting from reality, and learning, almost, how to do it out of MY head. At least, I'll get there eventually, or so I hope.
