See ya!!!

Well, after some comments, I MUST explain my pride… I’m not proud of EU leaders, because they have the great opportunity to built a great European Country, and they quarrel all the time. I’m not proud of our foreign politic (because we haven’t one… I’m proud of the people that look at Europe like something more and something better than their little country… I’m proud of european culture… even if Europe generated monsters in the past. And finally yes, I’m proud to be european because if americans can say it loud, why can’t we?

Peace

Agree completely with the author's comment by the pic. Europe has huge potential. Once all these ingrate leaders stop fighting each other and stop sucking US cock, maybe Europe can become a strong, independent Union sometime in the future.

Yeah, being European rocks.

I have serious trouble with all that German pride shit that's been cropping up all over the place, and even the new surge of local patriotism feels uncomfortable to me. But Europe - pretty marvellous continent, even if the EU is responsible for a lot of shit. But all the political crap aside, I think it's pretty fucking amazing that we GOT a European Union after all those pointless wars in the 20th century. And even though some people would say the Euro played a big part in fucking up our economy - I think it's pretty damn cool that I can live and work anywhere in Europe, and not have to bother about changing money when I want to hop over to Vienna, Paris, Dublin, etc... (I forgot - is Italy a Euro country, too?)

And if we can keep the Bushes of the world from blowing up the planet, so much the better.

Grazie per questo. È veramente una bella deviation. ... I have no idea if "deviation" is male or female in Italy.

The sooner the EU establishes itself as a superpower, the better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

primus In reply to kronix [2004-04-05 17:43:59 +0000 UTC]

That's true, in some aspects. And we'd certainly be the superpower, if Russia was to join us, too... we'd have (approximately):

674,789,654 citizens (52.4% of China, 232.4% of the US) spread over 21,943,033 square kilometers of land (228.6% of China, 227.9% of America). We're not doing too badly, anyway - as of May the 1st, we will have 530,263,374 citizens in 4,867,832 square kilometers of space.

Yes, I am a nerd - I worked that out last night, and presented it neatly in Excel

I remind you that in history, there have been calls for Russia, Turkey, and even Israel to join the EU.

Lisbon-Daysleeper In reply to primus [2006-10-19 19:35:46 +0000 UTC]

there were? i admit that's news to me... Still, we're not even letting turkey in, let alone russia or israel, just wouldn't make sense.

primus In reply to Lisbon-Daysleeper [2006-10-19 20:37:59 +0000 UTC]

You think? Turkey became a candidate country to accede to the EU in 1999. It started negotiations to join in 2005.

In a decade or so, Turkey may very well be in the EU.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lisbon-Daysleeper In reply to primus [2006-10-19 22:04:27 +0000 UTC]

well they had clearence to engage in negotiations, but with the refusal to admit the armenian massacre, the lack of freedom of speach (people still get tried for treasom and "insult to national identity" for speaking their minds) and the recent frictions with france, i think they are staying out. I'd like them to join eventually, but only after they've come a long way, politically.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

primus In reply to Lisbon-Daysleeper [2006-10-19 22:50:21 +0000 UTC]

That's part of what the decade or so would include. Once they've been "accepted", as it were, they won't be "in" until they complete a series of social, political and economical reforms. It's the same with Romania joining in 2007. They've had to change a lot of things for that. It's one of the reasons joining the EU takes so long.

Also, as it goes, Chirac is pro-Turkish accession.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lisbon-Daysleeper In reply to primus [2006-10-19 23:07:38 +0000 UTC]

yes, but he's not representative there. And chirac isn't gonna last much longer

I agree with you statements completely

What is great about European patriotism for now, is that it's not as much a made place as a in-making... It's an union patriotism, not an exclusion one

perencake In reply to earendil [2006-08-01 12:21:27 +0000 UTC]

yeah, what's the big deal with being proud, doesn't that mean you find yourselves superior and maybe even of greater value than others? i don't think europe is doing all that well, and don't really see it as an outstanding unit, more connected within than with the rest of the world, except trough its leaders, which i dislike.

i can immagine people think their way of life is great, but if it is all that great, then does it need to be forced onto others? if it is great, won't that be enough for it to gain attention? i see no point in shouting at people "look at me, cause i'm great" like a schoolmaster. if i'm all that great people will get interested and ask for themselves. in this way, learning is more an unfolding of your energy, than the stuffing in of a story/culture of someone else.

Allthough i'm also proud to be european i think we don't have to shout it out. Some americans shout all the time "proud american" stuff just because the 80% of the rest of the planet thinks they are stupid or something. We don't have to repeat their mistakes

very cool -- like the follow-up comment too.

i'd love a common (optional) european passport -- which has been discussed a few times. there is so much rich history, art, and philosophies to enjoy as common european heritage that it seems a shame to be stuck in just one tiny country... i admit i can be an idealist, but hey, why not?!

things should bring people together. i hope that's the aim of the european devart community, rather than, as ~raun worried, an exercise in flag-waving. could be a great thing!

I'm sorry but I don't agree fully on your views. I don't see the point with such patriotism. I guess it's good that you are proud of Europe, but I can't see why you should. Neither do I see what Americans are to be proud of.
I would rather like people to learn by the history's mistakes, and improve the world.
