Description I've been trying to draw pox a lot more to get more comfortable with him. I tried drawing a wide range of emotions here but mainly just sketching and practicing my line of action. I'll get more into turn-arounds and what not soon, I need to flush out his personality using just poses... at least that's my goal. Enjoy!

*hunie I'm sorry I haven't finished your picture yet but don't worry I haven't forgotten about it. I's coming I promise, I love you mwah!*

Hey thanks!

I got two questions if you don't mind me asking here too.

What art/animation school did you go to?

And, uhh.... hrm, it's embarrassing. Is my design on Sarah working any?

Answer the first, I went to Woodbury University in Burbank California, which also happens to be where I teach. They offered me a teaching gig for the Animation Drawing class, they wanted an alumni who could relate to the students but they had to settle for me. No no just kidding, I graduated in '05.

Answer the second, the design is ok but I would simplify it. There are way too many details, like what are those things on her ankles? Why are they bandages on her tail? As I'm sure you've noticed she's not easy to animate. I can tell just by looking. Also work on the overall shape of her hair, nail the shape that really defines who she is. Also she should present herself in regards to her personality. I don't know anything about the character but from what I can see she's poor and stupid. Her hair looks really ratty and unkept as well as her clothes and judging from the different pics of her she's non too bright. If that's completely wrong then you need to work on it. Your goal should be to say everything about a character without using words. Take my Pox character; he's extremely expressive but clever at the same time. He's very curious and loves exploring new things and places. You'll notice I don't have a lot of pics of him getting hit or hurt mainly because he's the one causing it, on accident of course, to his partner. Oh and he can be a tad sarcastic. Anyway, I can do a little sketch of how I interpret the character if you'd like but you seem to have a good handle on her. I think the main thing is you have to like her which it looks like you do. As long as you have an emotional investment in the character you'll want to flush out her personality more.

I could remove the belt loops on her skirt, but the black bands on her ankles sort of keeps a theme to her (hair-band, shirt straps, shorts). I've tried drawing her without them, the ankles just feel.... bare.

You're close on personality, but I think I'm on the right track. Granted she doesn't have a lot of money, which is supposed to tie to the theme of money not being what makes a person happy, but she does act like a ditz, usually for the sake of making people laugh. As such, she tends to get into trouble quite often, accounting for the messy hair, frequent accidents, came-as-she-is clothing and bandaged tail. She's also supposed to come off as a bit more silly and playful, with a few rare moments of wisdom (again, for the sake of comedy when they happen). So I think I'm on the right track, just need to simpilfy some details. ... if I can find any I can stand to lose.

I really do love her though, she means the world to me. I've just been exhausting some emotional ranges and situations for her for a while. What should I try to make her do more of to show more of her silliness?

A sketch of how you interpret Sarah or Pox? You lost me there.

If you think the character won't work without the ankle straps then keep them. I was just wondering what they were for. Another thing I forgot to mention are the size of her feet. Is she a rabbit or a cat? Because cats, even cartoon ones, don't have those kinds of big feet. If you've seen the movie "Cat's Don't Dance" you'll see some really nice cat designs that work really well. You also want to nail down her age because that will have an affect on the design. Right now I'd say she was in her mid to late teens or early twenties. Somewhere between 17-20. Mainly because you've chosen to draw her feminine forms i.e. the legs, arms, etc. The more shapely a female character becomes the older they look. If she's supposed to be younger than tone back some of her forms. Again using Pox as an example he's around 19, I didn't want him too young and not too old. He needs to be clever but with lots of energy at the same time, and he's a kid at heart. But you'll notice there's no definition in his arms to indicate a forearm or a calf muscle in his legs.
I don't have a problem with showing lady lumps but you're design tends to lean more towards an anime feel. Especially in the face, I don't know what it is, maybe the eyes or shape of the head? Again if that's what you're going for then do it. It just seems to me like you want a more Looney Tunes style because it's hard to push designs in the anime style. To answer your question about making her do more things, just keep with what you've been doing. If you want to go deeper then think of specific situations and how she would react to them. Like how would she ride a unicycle? Make a sandwich? Shoot a basketball? Those kinds of things. I actually have a short film idea where all Pox does is walk but shows a wide range of emotions.
Damn I guess I keep writing way too much but I hope this helps. Oh and I meant make a sketch of Sarah, i've already done tons of Pox pics.

Oh, she's a cat.... just not a very graceful one. I thought cats have big feet too, they just walk on tiptoe.

Age is a touchy thing, but I guess I'd say she's more of a 16-17 year old. She just started growing into her hips, or at least so says my character design teacher when I asked her.

I guess I could revert back to her more formless legs (they used to be), but I kinda like her arms like they are, they're not defined per se, but they have a rhythm I like. As for lady lumps.... I didn't want them to call too much attention, so I could stand to make them a bit subtler, if that's what you're going for. I don't think I should remove them completely though...

Hmmm. You know, I've been working towards just making her eyes a bit more cartoony (she's been getting smaller and smaller irises) but I can't seem to close the circle her eyes make without feeling I've added too much. I can't live without her rounded head either, I just can't seem to see her with a pear-shaped head. I guess more or less I'm just trying to experiment with the style a bit, make it a bit of old meets new, a fresh twist on an old concept. That sort of thing.

I don't think I've had trouble with Sarah's expressions with her face the way it is. I'm pretty confident that this can still work, just slightly... different, I guess?

Thanks for taking the time to actually respond tho, annnd I guess you could do a sketch of Sarah, but if you make her look like a drooling idiot I'll hunt you down... Well, maybe not, but be gentle with her, she's my pride and joy. I'm also curious as to see what you could be seeing that I currently can't.

Your stuff is so impressive. I love the line of action you give in each pose, makes each one so dynamic. It's a great reference for aspiring animators, myself included! Keep up the amazing work, and I'd love to see some stuff actually animated, my good sir.

It's probably his baggy pants. They don't reach the ground like Rogers' but he was definitely inspiration for the design.
