When I made the futuristic version of Blastwave, a few people said it looked "too serious".It just made me think of what a serious version of blastwave would look like. So I attempted to make a very dark and depressing version of blastwave for april fools, but couldn't really push it to the level I hoped and ended up scrapping the idea.
And today I was listening to some random kotiteollisuus songs and was inspired to make a quick pic based on that semi-serious version of blastwave I imagined before.

Is it highly coincidental that I found this on the google images the other day and saying "God I wish that was on DA."

i see a little intention of stalker shadow of chernobyl.. and i loved that game..
and also i love this picture. very deep & dark, impressive and comprehensive in detail to build a whole scene around that picture in mind. specialy the really good painted gasmask catches my eyes. the "ssao"/ the well placed shadow effects raises the head. makes the surviver a bit arrogant, but serious!

Man, I love Gone with the Blastwave... I don't think this dark version would be worse if you keep with the same stories.

The fact that blastwave isn't drawn in a cartoony manner just enhances the humor, kind of gives it a subtle feel that really stands out to me.
I think if you wanted to give more of an oppressive tone it easily could have been enhanced by the characters' pose, perhaps have him looking back into the distance with his head hung a little low, show in a way that the oppressive atmosphere is weighing down on him. As much as the background gives the idea of a hostile environment I see him and get a feeling of determination or even optimism.
Regardless, goes without saying its still very well done.

A friend showed me this picture, it spoke to both of us...
To me it said:
That a huge battle had just ended, maybe he's the only one left....he's sitting there reflecting on the day wondering why he survived while so many didn't.....right now, he's only seeing the darkness in front of him, yet the light is right there on his shoulders, getting ready to show him the day, and why he was to survive.
