My thanks for your visitation to the gallery – taking time to read my FFM fics and a few others besides!
And the comments are as always much appreciated. ;}

De nada, friend.

FFM hit on exactly the wrong month for me, but that doesn't mean I can't learn from it. And let's face it: flash fiction is really damned hard!

Truth!
I never did get caught up either. Β

May I'll have to switch FFM to December or something. Β

Okay, so I looked up 'Der Graf' and tried to translate the lyrics all by myself and it all went well until I got to 'der Graf hat Angst, Angst vor HIV'.Β

I'm still giggling.Β

It's brilliant, no?
My German teacher introduced me to the band. She played the video for "Junge" to my college class. We were shaking by the end.

Nah, we were loving it! I owe a lot of my taste in modern German punk/metal/rock/rap to her (which is therefore broad, yet questionable). We'd grind over genitive case for two hours, and she'd end class with a music video. It was pretty phenomenal.

Of course one day she played Die Arzte's 'Schlaflied' and were all creeped right the hell out. Well, the ones who could follow the lyrics were. The rest just followed the video, and were only slightly creeped out.

Seems like all German teachers are awesome in some way... Alas, mine doesn't have time for German music, but on the other hand he's quite familiar with their way of thinking and society as a whole.

*looks up lyrics* ... Wow. I mean, WOW.

"Die Sonne geht auf und du bist tot" Damn.

And what are your conclusions about Germans and their society thus far? Coming from a German family, I'm quite curious.

dark-precipice In reply to Isengim [2014-09-09 06:45:57 +0000 UTC]

So far and given my personal experience with tourists and businessmen at the hotel, I have come to the conclusion that Germans are really pleasant to have around.

Isengim In reply to dark-precipice [2014-09-11 02:54:12 +0000 UTC]

True enough. We keep the English in line. *divisive history jokes for the win!*

My rule of thumb is that the people and the weather get warmer the farther south you go. The Prussians can be stiff, but the Bavarians tend to be more jolly. Austria is quite temperate, and the people relaxed. At least that's how I remember it. That and Germans nagging English tourists to be polite. Which was too funny.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dark-precipice In reply to Isengim [2014-09-12 11:53:14 +0000 UTC]

Is it bad that I laughed?

Ah, speaking of politeness, I remember laughing when my teacher taught me the expression 'Ruhe bitte!'. As you know, it means 'Quiet, please!' and all things considered it's a very polite phrase... but when you say it aloud it sounds kind of scary and harsh, like a bark.

Which part of Germany is your family from?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Isengim In reply to dark-precipice [2014-09-12 14:48:19 +0000 UTC]

Just means you get the joke.

Yeah, that's just kinda German. If you roll the 'R' it might take some of the bite out of it - but it's still German. It's well-suited to definitive, even brusque statements, but you'll find that it softens with practice. Conversational German, while difficult to master, is virtually bark free.

The North. We're Texas-transplanted Prussians.
Yeah, be afraid. Be very afraid.

dark-precipice In reply to Isengim [2014-09-12 15:17:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I've noticed this about conversational German - very soft-sounding, even cute at times, especially with the right intonation. Β

Eeek!

Oh wait, I forgot I live on another continent. I'm safe...

... for now.

It's pretty much the best thing on the internet. Makes for real fun family gatherings when the Finnish side shows up and start teasing the balefully stolid Prussians.

America is weird like that. Get a table of people together, and if they've researched their own ancestries (important cultural note: if they care to research it), you can have grandchildren of war heroes, descendents of freedom fighters, great-grandchildren of storied rabbis - the sheer magnitude of heritage one person can have is staggering. A sampling of random people sharing their lineages is mind-boggling.
This may explain why Americans act like they have schizophrenia.
