This made me remember The Acharis from The Neverending Story: creatures so ugly, they hide underground, to keep from seeing each other's ugliness in the sunlight. They cry tears of acid, which help them mine out some sort of silver filigree, which is then used to create a beautiful Silver City. The main character made those creatures up while inventing a story, and didn't consider their feelings until he actually met them (and acknowledged that he was actually the one responsible for their plight). But then, when he wished them to become happy and beautiful (they became some sort of clown butterflies and forgot all about their earlier existence), they stopped mining out the silver and started destroying the beautiful filigree they'd once created. So the conclusion was that their sadness and ugliness was necessary (a sort of "equivalent exchange") for the existence of other forms of beauty.
Sorry for the rant. I thought I should explain what I'm talking about, if I was gonna bring out the old "This reminds me of" cliche
