Description the cycle continues on... this tree, which i have come to know over the years, has passed on. left me a bit depressed when i saw that it did not leaf out this year, however later in the spring i noticed an acorn that established itself as a seedling not 5 ft away from my former friend... with the coming storm, this new life will be nourished and i will have the pleasure of watching my new friend make its place.

same tree as "I stand alone"

all thoughts and suggestions are most welcome.

I would love for this to hang in my bedroom. The tree is so lonely, but that's why it's so beautiful. This is amazing!

thanks man! yeah... though i just aged the tree this week and i found it to have only lived to just under 50 years. the avg life exp on blue oaks is 150-200 yrs. i have been documenting randomn oak deaths in the central sierra foothills and it seems that the mean average death is falling as the temps rise and pollution levels increase. sadly enough the regeneration rates are not keeping up with the mortality rates. this will be a problem soon...

If i had the money i would buy a print of this one in an eye blink. I love the colors, the background, the sky and the concept. I also like the story behind it. I also like the fact that, in my opinion, reflects many feelings, some that can't be explained by mere words. When concentrated, you feel part of the photo. This is one of those photos that are a "Must Favourite" 10/10. Keep up the excellent work!

I absolutely agree. I am not a photographer myself, so i can't quite give you such a detailed explanation on the subject, i just want to say again, it is a beautiful photo. Excellently well taken, from just the right angle. I think that. Really overwhelming.

I just thought of something... I've noticed that you tend to use a faster shutter speed and a wider aperture... I'm just curious if this is something you do intentionally.

If not, have you tried putting it at a higher aperture? It'll cause more of the photo to be sharply in focus and you really only need to have the shutter speed at 500 to catch everything. (But if you try this, let me know if you don't know about the Sweet/Sunny Sixteen or Basic Daylight Exposure rules... cause I'd hate to ruin your photos.)

MountainPsyche In reply to fufuthegreat [2007-01-30 21:36:56 +0000 UTC]

i know!! thanks for noticing that... i usually shoot all manual... however everytime i switch to aperture priority it sets it to a wide ap... and me being in a hurry usually, i always forget to reset it.

however with my cam... i wide aperture and a quick shutter speed helps with bringing out the contrast that my sensor is so crappy at picking up
time for a new cam i suppose...

thank you so much dear keep the suggestions coming!

oh yeah.. i don't know about those rules...

fufuthegreat In reply to MountainPsyche [2007-01-31 00:51:35 +0000 UTC]

No problem. I guess contrast is good. well, I don't guess... I KNOW contrast is good.

Here's the rundown on the Basic Daylight Exposure (aka: Sweet 16 Rule):

When the sun is at least 20 degrees above the horizon and it's a cloudless day, adjust your shutter speed as close to your ISO as possible (as long as it's a full stop not a half-stop, which is difficult to guess with digitals) and always, ALWAYS start with f16.

For instance...
If you're shooting with ISO 200 (because it's a relatively bright day and you don't want any noise), set your shutter speed to 250 and your aperture to 16. If the conditions are really what you estimate them to be, you will get a perfectly exposed photograph every time. There are adjustments to make in special situations, too, but you can ask if you want to hear those... I won't bore you with them right now.

Just in case you don't know the apertures and the shutter speeds in full stops, here they are.

F: 2--2.8--(3.5)--4--5.6--8--11--16--22--32--45
SS: 1--2--4--8--15--30--60--125--250--500--1000--2000--4000
