Description

When: March 31, 2019

Where: Natura ARTIS Magistra Amsterdam, The Netherlands

I love these Eels

They're so much fun, and very photogenic, but you need the right camera to get a decent enough shot. And with our Dad's camera, I finally managed

AND with an extra fish in the background too!

Species: Spotted Garden Eel (Gevlekte buisaal)

Latin name: Heteroconger Hassi

Originates from the Indo-Pacific.

See, your improving. Granted it’s Dad’s camera but your Sony should give you the same results.

Haha, that camera is magic

I miss my own Sony, that one was also very good in tricky light circumstances. But alas, didn't trust a new Sony within my budget, so chose something else, as did M.

(The old Sony had some stabilizing issues and a constant erroer unfortunately that couldn't be fixed - M and my own camera suffered just outside of the 2 year warranty...)

Luckily our Dad isn't a fanatic photographer, and we're often allowed to take his camera when he doesn't come with, or borrow it when he does come with

I’ve been shooting with a Canon for so long, I can’t use another brand without going full auto. I hate full auto! No creativity! My 60D is not the newest model, but it does amazing things, when you play with the settings.

When we started zoo photography, we had these small Canon Ixus digital cameras.

When we took it more seriously, we somehow shifted to Sony... Now M's got a Panasonic and I've got a Nikon and it takes a lot of getting used to

We also start by going full auto and figuring out what's what every time.

M actually has trouble using my Nikon, and I still haven't figured out her Panasonic!

I was never able to decide if garden eels freaked me out or melted me more They remind me of Ursula's "poor unfortunate souls", you know? Actually, I believe that's the sea creature that inspired creators of that sequence.

Haha, me too - so many fish look so freaky

But I like these ones, they have cute looking eyes

Haha, I totally get what you mean! Those were some of the saddest things to put in a children's movie...

They were, but you know what, they were cathartic, like so many other things in those movies. Sadness and fear are good to know, otherwise, you never learn to be stronger. And when you should embrace them, instead.
