Description

When: May 31, 2018

Where: Zie-ZOO Volkel, The Netherlands

This fun beauty was very playful! It's something you don't expect from birds, especially these large Raptors, and then at a zoo too. But this being a juvenile, I guess it kind of makes sense. She was twisting and turning, responding in different ways and it was just amazing to have this sort of interaction with such a majestic bird. They're all just kids after all

Species: Bald Eagle (Amerikaanse Zeearend)

Latin name: Haliaeetus leucocephalus

Originates from North America.

Current status: Least Concern

 Did you know:

…The Bald Eagle is of course, not actually bald, but it’s name derives from an older meaning, namely “white headed”.

…Both sexes are similar in plumage –though immature birds are brown – but the females are larger than the males.

…In the late 20th century, the Bald Eagle was on the brink of extirpation (extinct in its chosen geographic area, but still existing elsewhere) but has recovered in a matter of 12 years, from Endangered, to Threatened, and since 2007 has been removed from the endangered and threatened list in most states.

Thank you
We've been lucky to have come across some playful birds of prey last year; I never thought it possible that raptors might be willing to interact and sort of play with people, but this one of those birds. A young and fun one

It was a special day and moments with this raptor for sure Now I know to make the most of a bird sitting up high and wanting to play a bit

Not every day we get a (no pun intended) - bird's eye view - of the roof of an eagle's mouth! !!

Haha, I love that

No, it really doesn't happen every day, which makes it a pretty worthwhile photo to share here

This has got to be one of the most awesome shots you took. Never seen a photo of a bird taken from this angle. Very impressive shot.

Haha, thank you so much, that means a lot

I love the weird moments, the ones that are silly and not particularly beautiful because it's so different from the usual.

It's really awesome when they're above you; I think that this angle sort of gives them the feeling that they're superior (which they are) but also on the same level. You're not a threat, and because they're juveniles, they're very curious and looking to interact

You are so welcome. I like photos such as this as they are not expected and turn out so good. When that camera is in your hand you don't know what is going to turn up. This I like. I would had loved to see what you saw just before you snapped it by your explanation!

Thank you so much

It was a first time for us too We'd seen raptors with their beak open (steppe eagle last year) but this one was seated above us so it lend a whole different view than when you're on the same level or above them.

It was really amazing because she was interacting and playing, sort of asking for it too

A whole series actually

It's more special now, because she left the zoo shortly after. So really happy to be able share some good photos of that last time, even if does show her silly side more than just the pretty one

That makes it even better to capture an out of character moment, maybe she just felt like letting it out for a moment.

Mouselemur In reply to FlyingGuardianFish [2018-11-22 12:07:08 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! I love showing the awkward, weird and silly moments of animals

They're able to do so many fun things, so much more than just look pretty. Sometimes photos like these are taking on purpose, but a lot of my photos turn out having captured those silly moments

FlyingGuardianFish In reply to Mouselemur [2018-11-23 17:20:58 +0000 UTC]

This is it, animal behaviour is not done on purpose, which make it sometimes more funnier to see. You got good skills for sure and thank you sharing with us.

Mouselemur In reply to Fractaldragon [2018-11-22 07:43:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

It was really amazing to get to "play" with this bird; she was really responsive and loved interacting. She'd follow you with her eyes, tilting her head and twist and turn with her beak open and clicking a bit now and then.

Thanks

Yeah, I don't think I'd seen it before either... That's the benefit of being on a lower angle (they're high up, so that's easily done). And she was playful, so that for sure helped in getting this shot
