Description
When: June 6, 2018
Where: Dierenpark De Oliemeulen Tilburg, The Netherlands
When we saw the photos another zoo photographer took at this zoo of the Bald Eagle, we sort of hoped to see him too.
Well, I did but not M as she was still inside going crazy over the Geckos and baby Bat (understandably so). In the end, even though I missed some cute moments of the baby Bat, I was happy I did check out outside because this guy went inside quickly after.
He was doing his best to capture the Pigeons that unwittingly came too close (some near misses!) and was being quite awesome. He didn't fly in the demo because he only has one handler, but being able to see him if only for a short time, was totally worth it.
Species: Bald Eagle (Amerikaanse Zeearend)
Latin name: Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Originates from North America.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…The Bald Eagle is of course, not actually bald, but it’s name derives from an older meaning, namely “white headed”.
…Both sexes are similar in plumage –though immature birds are brown – but the females are larger than the males.
…In the late 20th century, the Bald Eagle was on the brink of extirpation (extinct in its chosen geographic area, but still existing elsewhere) but has recovered in a matter of 12 years, from Endangered, to Threatened, and since 2007 has been removed from the endangered and threatened list in most states.
