Description
When: July 19, 2020
Where: Vogelpark Avifauna Alphen aan de Rijn, The Netherlands
I consider myself to have a more than healthy respect for the immense beaks of Hornbills. It's basically why before, we didn't really try to photograph them. Those beaks are long and sharp and have a far reach. Best to keep your camera safe
But lately, we've been trying to step out of our comfort zone (safely) and try and photograph other animals more. Thus, photographing more Hornbills like this curious male.
Species: Visayan [Tarictic] Hornbill (Visayasneushoornvogel)
Latin name: Penelopides Panini
Originates from the rainforests on the islands of Panay,Negros, Masbate and Guimaras in the Philippines.
Current status: Endangered
Did you know:
…Adult Visayan Hornbills show sexual dimorphism. While the female sports mostly black plumage, the male has a creamy-white head, neck and upper chest.
…The Birds are considered quite noisy, emitting an incessant vocalization that sounds like “ta-rik-tik” which gave them their generic name of Tarictic Hornbill. However, despite this noise, they are hard to find amidst the foliage of the rainforest.
