Description

When: April 11, 2019

Where: Faunapark Flakkee Nieuwe-Tonge, The Netherlands

The zoo's season wasn't open for very long when we visited, so the Asian Palm Civets weren't  *that* used to seeing people - with cameras - yet.

And eating with on-lookers is something that makes you somewhat vulnerable. In the end, it didn't stop them. That trust is an amazing thing.

Species: Asian Palm Civet (Loewak, Palmroller of koffierat)

Latin name: Paradoxurus Hermaphroditus

Originates from Pakistan, India, Southern China and Southeast Asia.

Current status: Least Concern

Did you know:

… It is probably for its part in the production of Kopi Luwak – a civet coffee that refers to the seeds of coffee berries once they have been eaten and defecated by this animal – that they are best known.

… It has been suggested that the increase of capturing Asian Palm Civets to produce Kopi Luwak – aside from being hunted for bush meat and the pet trade – may constitute a significant threat to wild populations.

… Unlike similar Civet species, the Asian Palm Civet has a ringless tail.

… Their habit of feeding on palm flower sap, which turns into toddy (a sweet liquor) when fermented, has been cause to sometimes name Asian Palm Civets “Toddy Cats”.

… Anal scent glands will emit a nauseating secretion as a chemical defense when threatened or upset.

… Despite what it’s species name might suggest – Hermaphroditus – the Asian Palm Civets have, like all other mammals, two distinct sexes and are not in fact hermaphrodites.

This is a really interesting animal. It’s obviously a hybrid as most civets are. But what is the dominant sub species?

I didn't know most Civets are hybrids - are they?

I mean, these are said to actually be Asian Palm Civets...

Beautiful animal with such a gorgeous face, why do most animals have to be hunted for something or other, cannot we just enjoy the beauty of them, before they all end extinct.

Thanks, they really are gorgeous

So many people have a skew view of nature and animals. They only care about using them, in whichever manner - for food (when there's plenty of legal food), for their body functions or physique (bones, horns, or in this case, their bowel functions etc.) and to showcase them as a trophy

It makes me so incredibly sad, also to hear about culling for no reason, other than that people want to hunt the prey of natural predators instead

Hes a beauty, people should have left him alone to eat, before they came snapping with their cameras. Such big eyes.

Haha, that's us too, you know

They were, back then, more easily spooked - and at the same time, curiously climbing up to sniff us better!
