Description
When: December 13, 2020
Where: Dierenpark Zie-ZOO Volkel, The Netherlands
We were busy photographing the other Hyena and as they can go inside at any time, that one woke this one up I think he/she'd been peacefully sleeping in a straw bed, but still decided to wake up and go for a late-afternoon walk. (Most animals get fed a last time near closing time.)
Species: Striped Hyena (Gestreepte Hyena)
Latin name: Hyaena Hyaena
Originates from North and East Africa, the middle East and Central Asia.
Current status: Near Threatened
Did you know:
…The Striped Hyena is known to kill its own prey, and on rare occasions, attack humans.
…They are a monogamous pair, in which both male and female take part in raising the cubs.
…It’s a nocturnal animal, typically only emerging in complete darkness, and tends to quickly return to its lair at sunrise.
…Some people regard it as cowardly, for feigning death when attacked, but they’re also known to stand their ground against larger predators such as Leopards, in disputes over food.
…In Middle Eastern folklore, the Striped Hyena is often the symbol for stupidity and treachery, and becomes the physical incarnation of jinns.
…It is the national animal of Lebanon.
