With as many Sri Lankan Leopards as we've seen in this zoo, it can be hard to tell them apart. It's all about the face, telling us who's who. You might not be able to see it at this point, but this is actually one of the triplets He and his brothers were about 4 months old when we took this photo, but them being boys they seem to grow so much faster!
They have no scruples whatsoever; they'll come real close to the fencing and seem to want to interact. Not too weird, considering their Mom was raised by keepers and therefore has a different connection to humans than some of the other animals. They've definitely copied that more loving attitude a bit, though more often than not, they're way too active, playful and rumbunctious to pay attention to visitors. After all, with two brothers and a Mom to tease, there's plenty of stuff to occupy yourself with
Species: Sri Lankan Leopard (Sri Lankaanse panter)
Latin name: Panthera Pardus Kotiya
Originates from Sri Lanka.
Current status: Endangered
Did you know:
…The Sri Lankan Leopard was only first described in 1956, by the Sri Lankan zoologist Deraniyagala.
…Its Latin addition “kotiya” is a Sinhala name, but has been often wrongly translated as “Tiger” due to incorrect information, mistaking Leopards for “diviya”, the Sinhala term for small wild cats; since then, “kotiya” has been used for Tigers, and “diviya” for Leopards.
