Description
When: December 24, 2022
Where: Dierenpark Zie-ZOO Volkel, the Netherlands
We're not often able to photograph them properly - they're just that quick and we're not too fond of their enclosure either...
Luckily this male sat in a good spot, at a good distance, allowing us enough time to photograph him.
Species: White-Nosed Coati (Witsnuitneusbeer)
Latin name: Nasua Narica
Originates from the wooded area, dry and moist forest, of the Americas.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…The White-Nosed Coati is also known as the Coatimundi, Pizote, Antoon and Tejón.
…While it’s other relatives in the Procyonidae family tree such as the Raccoon and Ringtail, are nocturnal the Coati is active by day. Although in areas where they are hunted for food, or where they raid human settlements for their own food, their routine might become more nocturnal.
…While adult males are solitary, females and immature males form social groups. They use many vocal signals to communicate, spend time grooming themselves and each other, and during foraging the young ones are left with a pair of babysitters.
