Description

When: June 19, 2020

Where: Dierenrijk Nuenen/Mierlo, The Netherlands

Do you know what's so cool about Gibbons? Adults aren't just sexual dimorphic and thus look quite different from each other. But the babies go through a full on change too!

Kind of the same way some Lemur species do; they are born looking like Mom before showing their true colors that tell you what gender they are. Except with Gibbons, both the male and female are born looking like a female and then will ALWAYS change to male coloring. Males will stay that way, and females will change again to their adult female coloring.

Jaya is in that phase where she is showing full male coloring.

Species: Northern White-Cheeked Gibbon (Witwanggibbon)

Latin name: Nomascus Leucogenys

Originates from South East Asia.

Current status: Critically Endangered

Did you know:

…They are closely related to the Southern White-Cheeked Gibbon, and were once considerd conspecific. The females of the species are virtually indistinguishable in appearance. Males can be distinguished by their white cheeks- in the Southern species, the patches start below the ears and surround the mouth; with the Northern species, the patches reach the upper parts of the ears and don’t touch the corners of the mouth.

…Northern White-Cheeked Gibbons are sexually dimorphic; males are slightly larger, all-over black in coloring apart from two white patches on their cheeks, a tuft of hair on the crown of their head, and a gular sac. Females are all-over reddish to tan in coloring, have no cranial tuft, but do sport dark-brown to black fur running fron the crown of their head to the nape of the neck.

…Even for Gibbons, they have unusually long arms – their arms are 1.2 to 1.4 times as long as their legs.

…Northern White-Cheeked Gibbons are born blond, like their mother; by the time they’re one, their fur changes to resemble that of a male before taking on their sexually dimorphic coloring. Males will grow into their coloring, where females will slowly turn blond once again. They do, however, all vocalise the female form of song till they’re 4-5 years old.
