What do you call someone who's unhappier than unhappy? Because that would fit this Owl to a T. Ill-tempered, grumpy, grouchy... He's all of those things the minute he sees someone. Aside from the ones we've seen at Artis, all Burrowing Owls seem perpetually unhappy-looking.
Species: Burrowing Owl (Konijnenuil of holenuil)
Latin name: Athene Cunicularia
Originates from the Americas.
Current status: Least Concern

Haha, I'm still amazed we stopped long enough to take a photo. There are moments when you think they're going to teach you the hard way that you're not welcome

Hehe, we've had a few "run-ins" with Burrowing Owls now at different zoos where those guys just really aren't happy.
They look so incredibly perturbed to have people passing by (could be they're a spot that's hard to find, so they just don't see a lot of people) and we're starting to think it's just a combination of us + Burrowing Owls.
Used to be, at a different zoo where we fell in love with these Owls, that they were incredibly fun, cute and alert. But every other place, it's a no-go
