Description
When: August 4, 2019
Where: Dierenpark Zie-ZOO Volkel, The Netherlands
One of the absolute most special moments of this past year, was watching this Serval kitten grow up Starting this day, just the two of us, seeing this 10-day-old baby girl in the grass.
She was taken back to a place where her Mom kept her hidden (when she didn't carry her around). She's a little warrior, being a single kitten after many twins and even triplets once. Mom clearly didn't know how to keep this singleton occupied, but the kitten thrived regardless.
Species: Serval
Latin name: Leptailurus Serval
Originiates from Africa.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…DNA studies have shown that the Serval is closely related to the African Wild Cat, and the Caracal.
…Its long legs make it able for the Serval to achieve a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).
…The white spots on the back of the Serval’s ears are called “ocelli” and are used to signal kittens when hunting.
