Description
When: June 23, 2020
Where: Orchideeënhoeve Luttelgeest, The Netherlands
We were afraid, when we arrived and saw all the Lemurs sitting inside, we wouldn't get a good shot of them at all. But the glass wasn't too shabby, after all, and we maybe even got better photos of them inside than we did outdoors
Species: [Southern] Red-Fronted [Brown] Lemur (Bruine maki)
Latin name: Eulemur Rufifrons
Originates from Madagascar.
Current status: Near Threatened
Did you know:
…Until 2001, the Red-Fronted Lemur was considered a subspecies of Eulemur Fulvus, the Common Brown Lemur, when it was split into several subspecies and the Red-Fronted Lemur was grouped together with the Red Lemur as Eulemur Rufus. In 2008, Eulemur Rufus was split into two species – the Red Lemur and the Red-Fronted Lemur that we recognize today, based on their location on the island.
…Mitochondrial DNA analysis seems to indicate the Red-Fronted Lemur is more closely related to the Common Brown, White-Headed, and Sanford’s Brown than to the Red Lemur.
…Red-Fronted Lemurs are sexually dimorphic. Males have gray-brown upperparts, paler creamy-grey underparts and a reddish crown. Females have far more reddish-brown upperparts and a grizzled-grey crown. Both sexes have prominent white eyebrow patches and distinctive bushy, white cheeks, though those of the female are far less bushy than the males’. The face, muzzle and mid-forehead are dark grey to black, with a thin dark line dividing the crown.
