Swans can be very aggressive - and even violent - when they feel they and their young family are being threatened.
This is mostly the case, at least in our experience, for the male Swans. The females keep their young close, while the male makes sure any threats stay at a distance. He will spread his wings, set them up a bit higher, lower his head and start hissing.
They do appear a lot larger that way, but don't worry, we always keep a healthy distance
Species: Black Swan (Zwarte zwaan)
Latin name: Cygnus Atratus
Originates from Australia.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
...Like many species of Birds, Black Swans are monogamous breeders, but are unusual in that one-quarter of all pairings are male-to-male homosexual.
…The Black Swan utters a musical, far reaching, bugle-like sound, called either on the water or in flight, as well a range of softer crooning notes. It’s also known to whistle, especially when disturbed while breeding or nesting.

Their black coloring - especially in combination with those red accents - is so striking!

Back away from the swan. Nice and slow. Despite being beautiful, they are very aggressive.

That's pretty; usually swans are depicted being white instead of black

Well, they protect their territory so they waddle up to you in an aggressive manner, but the aggression hasn't moved beyond that.
Also, the distance factor plays in - we are separated by some low fencing that I reckon he could pass if he really wanted to.
Maybe he's just not *that* aggressive
