It is so uncommon for us to see these beauties, we were so happy!

Species: Gyrfalcon (Giervalk)

Latin name: Falco Rusticolus

Originates from the Arctic coasts and the islands of North America, Europe and Asia.

Current status: Least Concern

…Though it mainly resides in the aforementioned areas, they’re known to disperse more widely after the breeding season or in winter.

…The Gyrfalcon’s plumage varies with location, with birds being coloured from all-white to dark brown, but they’re the only predominantly white falcons.

…The male Gyrfalcon is called a “gyrkin” in falconry, and are hard to breed in a darker color than slate grey.

…The Gyrfalcon is a very large falcon, about the samze size as the largest buteos (Buzzard Hawks), and is known to hunt Peregrine Falcons.

…It is the national symbol of Iceland.
