"Betta splendens", also called the Siamese fighting fish or simply Betta.this colorful and flamboyant species of fresh-water fish, which is barely 5cm long, is a vicious fighter when comes in contact with another male of the same species. in its quiet moment, it nestles gracefully amidst water plants.

Beautiful piece. Both columns of kanji form the translation? I assume read top to bottom, right to left? I've not seen different sized kanji used in the same phrase before. Nice work.

the four larger kanji forms the translated phrases. the smaller characters are the date i made the painting and my alias in chinese.

chinese painting is supposed to capture the essence rather than the realism (much like writing a haiku). the artist strives to filter off 'unnecessary' details to bring what he/she wants to tell into focus.

That looks exactly like the beta fish that I had a few days ago! You see, it died from old age. It was a year old, I think.
