Thank you so much! This was one of the most colorful purple finches that I have ever seen. I felt so lucky to get to photograph her. I really appreciate your feedback!

I really love the closeness and the clarity here, not to mention the color. We have purple finches (who probably doesn't?) but I've not seen such a rich coloration. We used to feed the birds and squirrels but they were eating the seeds as fast as we could put it out and eventually it got to be more money than we wanted to put into it. So fun to watch though. Now we live in a place (apt.) that doesn't allow feeding birds.

(We live in apts on a small 5 acre lake and we have many geese and the argument is that the stray seeds falling on the ground attract the geese, who, in turn, leave a mess, if you know what I mean! And I do understand. It's the downside of having geese around.)

Thank you so much. This particular purple finch stood out from all the rest. I had never seen one with such deep coloration until I had the pleasure of photographing this little beauty. I encountered the same experience with feeding the birds here. It can become quite an expense. I live in the country and my home is surrounded by forest on all sides. My biggest issue became the chipmunks, opossums, coons, deer, and black bears. I had to cease feeding them when a family of chipmunks set up camp on my property and I soon discovered 20 or more ankle breaking holes throughout the yard. At the time, it was my only way to photograph birds, as I only had an 18-55 mm lens in my possession. I saved up and purchased my 200 mm lens, and this past Christmas a 300 mm lens. Now I can photograph them in their natural habitat...although I so miss feeding them and the joy that it brought me to see them so close.

Bravo on your new lens. That's exciting!

Yes, my parents (now my step-dad, my mom passed at 92 a year ago) have a summer home in the mountains of Colorado and they had to stop feeding the birds (seed) and hummers (nectar) because of of the bears.  I missed seeing the variety of birds they had come to the feeders in the mountains.

You've certainly got some great bird photos.

Thank you! I ultimately wish to obtain at least a 500 mm lens... however it is currently out of my reach. Photography is an expensive passion to have. My 300 mm has given me a little more reach though, and I am quite happy about that. I will really have to wait until spring to give it a good go as winter here offers very little to photograph. I am quite happy to know that you enjoy some of my photos. I started two years ago with a point and shoot camera, and purchased my DSLR a year ago. I have much to learn, and I love being able to view others photography, such as yours, for inspiration. Thanks again.

Good luck holding up a 500,    but then maybe you will carry around a mono or tripod. That size lens would lighten your pocketbook for sure. It would be a beast! My 100-400 starts to get heavy pretty fast. I do quite a lot of hand-held work with it but there are times when a tripod is best for the bigger lenses.

Luckily I have a fairly good tripod in my possession...I just tend not to ever use it. A 500 mm lens is a dream far off in the distance. A 400 mm would be fantastic as well! I guess it is good to have a goal that you have to work for and be patient for. I will certainly appreciate it when it is a reality!
