Description Here we are!
About 20 or so hours overall, colours done in Photoshop CS3.
Feel free to ask questions, I'll try to answer them.

Final piece is up here -

NB - this isn't a tutorial as such; i worked out a pretty solid method while working on these illustrations (I ended up producing more than 20 of them) but I've since changed my process a fair bit and always continue to experiment, but either way I hope it's helpful.
Enjoy!

Do you have/ plan to have a tutorial that explains various lighting and perspective methods? PS is a large, nebulous program to me still.

Mr--Jack In reply to Ocean-Redwood [2010-08-19 05:38:43 +0000 UTC]

Not specifically; though they're not really things that you'd need a photoshop-based tutorial for really.

I think the wacom bamboo tablets are pretty decent, but I'm not really sure - if you can get a second-hand intuos2 or 3 maybe they'd probably be not to badly priced and very good

Thanks!

hi Mr jack. nice tut thx!! but i have a question that bugs me a little...how do you do the "neutral silhouette"? do u use the pen tool for making a smooth selection? or do u just go with the brush and erease left overs or ...well , how??? i also like doing this but in the long run it gives me several problems like including many many imperfections in the selection for example... I appreciate any insights to this method thx!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to davidayalde [2010-06-10 01:59:24 +0000 UTC]

I don't worry about making the silhouette absolutely perfect; I usually just paint it in and erase out bits - it goes underneath the linework so you don't have to be too careful, and I always do a pass towards the end to paint over and properly clean up the edges so any imperfections will get ironed out later

thank you very much mrjack! this is very useful to know. Maybe this has been addressed b4 but I don't know where and i's about the quick-mask-tool method you use. I saw your hydralisk tut and tryed the quick mask tool but when i had something selected with it i really didn't know what to do next! What is the purpose of using it I ask(I have tryed to apply those selections in masks on layers with adjustments but dunno how to properly exploit that ) . thanks a lot and know that you have a big fan here!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to davidayalde [2010-06-25 05:35:03 +0000 UTC]

Well I have a tutorial for the quick-mask here ; aside from that, just practise with it, using painting and gradients and you'll get the hang of it.

I don't have anything any more in-depth than this I'm afraid, but it sounds like you're fairly well set, mostly it just takes practise and time
