Description So, not really sure what inspired this one . . . mostly just had fun drawing the skulls, less worried about the figure. I think I could re-do something similar with a more... appropriate? pose, this one seems a little carefree considering the setting.
I think I need to do some studies on hips; I do want to keep things a bit stylised, but I always have a bit of a hard time transferring what works nicely in a rough - [link] - into a painting, it always looks a lot weirder. I guess that could also partly just be a bit of an inherent difference between painting and loose stylised linework.

I feel like I can totally identify with you on the hips thing. I've never tried my hand a digital painting (and I am considerably less talented than you) but just during the transition from a loose, flowing pencil sketch into solid line work things begin to get skewed. Especially if there's no break between the two...it's like your eyes and brain just adjusts and accept the flaw from looking at it for so long...then a few days later you look at it and wonder how you didn't notice.
Anyways, that being said, it's very cool and her body looks great and stylized, and really doesn't seem "off" at all. The shadows on her face, neck, and collarbone are especially impressive. Good stuff.

Ouch! I think what needs to change is the position of the torso over the legs. Right now she's centred above the leg on the left, so the hip on the right has to jutt horribly out to the side.

I think you could save this painting by taking the legs further down and to the right, to elongate the torso and allow room for the hip on the left.

I think that the pose works out to your advantage. The skulls are also a very unique touch in my opinion, as they seem to meld into the cape, as opposed to just having them dangling or stuck on to them. Awesome picture!

I'm gonna favorite this one to have it near me, not only for the lovely visual experience but also for the great comment.. It still amaze me when good artists says that he/she needs to study. I mean, it's so obvious you have to practice to get somewhere.. but still.. maybe I'm just talking nonsense Also I can't agree more about the the sketch and final outcome thing!

I hear you on the rendering versus the sketchwork; think that's a common dilemma for painters and artists. Perhaps it's our tendency to scale back on anything over-exaggerated?

Though personally, thats' what I love about your paintings - you somehow over exaggerate certain parts and make it work and seem like it's perfectly able to step out in the real world being all badass. ;D

PS - Skulls are indeed awesome. I've been telling my parents I'd like one, but then they give me the raised eyebrow. xD

PaulReinwand [2012-02-20 18:15:31 +0000 UTC]

It's fun regardless, with a great use of negative space for the skull work. I think one of the things I admire most about your work that I imagine comes from working with real paint is the ability to imply vast amounts of detail with a single brush stroke. Speaking from personal experience I have a tendency to over render things under they turn into a hot mess, when in reality I should be painting smarter. The only area in this I might like to see some reworking is fleshing out the muscle mass a little more on the thighs, and perhaps pushing the feet and calves further into the background with some of that background color overlayed. I think it would help her figure pop a bit more.

In short: adore your work, don't be too hard on yourself, and keep up the learning process. Your dedication really shows with each new piece.
