I think that is Magpie before he was rescued, not the orc hunter. Cause of the scar on the nose. And the scar above his left eye.

I tend to give Magpie large, kinder eyes and a more slender, less broken nose, with a longer face in general.

But in the end, facial scaring is exactly the same. Or at least very very similar.
However is there a story behind that image of Branz?

The scarring is similar, yes. This is Branz when he was younger. He never started a fight, but he ended a lot.

Plus Magpie would be outright jealous of that beard... he can get a decent five o'clock shadow going but beyond that most people would consider his facial hair unattractive.

Aha! I was going to say that, but I didn't want to be presumptuous! I figured that regardless of his age magpie would have Ojibwe/ Japanese facial hair.

That's a pretty solid comparison, Native Americans are more closely related to the Japanese and peoples that currently reside in the arctic circle (siberians, klinkit, inuit, eskimo, laplanders).
If I had to check a box though he would be more closely related to Sioux Natives than Ojibwe... most Americans tend to lump "indians" together as one homogonized group,Β kinda similar how they wouldn't be able to spot the difference between korean and chinese or Vietnamese and malaysian... they just consider them all "asian" without even attempting to make distinctions.
