...Previously...

Winifred Pale went down to the school archives to try and find Angela. "Of all the days she stays late to tinker with magic spells," she sighed. Her father's birthday was fast approaching, and she needed Angela to help her find an appropriate gift. When Winifred walked down the stone steps, she did not find the brown-haired witch whom she was certain she reminded of this afternoon's shopping trip. Rather, she was surprised to find a canvas portrait framed in dazzling gold leaf leaning against a podium. It depicted a beautiful blonde haired woman holding a golden hand mirror and wearing a jeweled crown on her head.

"Funny, I've never seen this painting down here before." Winifred said aloud.

She then looked around to see if it had fallen from anywhere.

"Doesn't actually look like it belongs in here. In fact, I highly doubt the school could have afforded it." Her eyes darted across the archives once more for any signs of life. "Perhaps I'll just take this home and put hang on the wall for Father. He enjoys fine art like this. Looks like I didn't need assistance after all!" Winifred wrapped the painting in an old sheet and headed back to Pale Manor.

~~~
Once home, Winifred whipped off the dusty sheet. She could have sworn she saw the painting's bright blue eyes adjusting to the light. No matter, she thought, shrugging off the silly notion. Father will be home soon, and this painting needs a wall. She looked around and finally found a spot in the hallway where her father was sure to see it. Once the frame was secured, she admired her hanging job for a moment, then made her way to her room to prepare for dinner.
Queen Angeline watched as Winifred walked off, leaving her all alone. She was pleased that she now had a place to rule, yet she still felt alone as she hung on the wall. She then heard some approaching footsteps and gave a small smile as she realized she would soon have the company she desired. Vincent Pale had come home from a tiring day at his office and needed some rest.
"Oh! What's this?" Vincent asked to himself, seeing the picture of the beautiful queen in the hallway.
"My, this is a very exquisite painting," Vincent said, marveling at Queen Angeline's portrait.
"The background almost looks like a forest out of a storybook. That mirror she's holding could come out of any fairy tale I read when I was younger. And the queen herself....I don't believe I've ever seen a more enchanting looking woman. With that bright and lovely hair, to those beautiful eyes... Those eyes are the most inviting... almost like she's asking me to come and be with her..."
Although Vincent could clearly see this was a painting of a woman in front of a sunny valley, he could feel warmth coming from it. Slowly, transfixed on the beauty before him, he reached out his hand. The figure in the painting reached out hers.
~~~

Winifred knew this was the time her father usually arrived home, but he was nowhere to be seen. She padded up and down the halls of Pale Manor, her calls echoing off the silent walls.

"Father? Father, where are you? Are you here? I brought you a painting, have you... seen... it?" Winifred stopped in front of the painting she had brought home. A handsome blonde king with a scepter now stood next to the beautiful blonde queen. Winifred looked at the painting at first with confusion, swearing she remembered that the painting she brought home only had the queen.

"This is... wrong. This painting doesn't belong here. I... should find a more suitable place for this... where everyone can see it! Perhaps the foyer, or by the balcony..." Winifred then took the painting down from the wall and searched the mansion for a more suitable location for the new king and queen.

King Vincent and Queen Angeline smiled to each other as their first of many subject carried them about. Their reign in Underborough would be a long-lasting and prosperous one.

They should be fine in their rule, so long as plumbers or shadows of evil kings get near them.

I don't know if you've explained this yet, but why does Winifred's hair look like it's turning blonde and curly?

It's to imply that she is under the painting's spell as well. She may not be an oil-rendered princess, but she is moving it around at its will.

I sure think so.

Ah, I guess that makes Winnie the Heir Apparent and Eternal Princess, seeing as the King and Queen are in that quantum state of being absent (or in this case "absent") but apparently still holding their titles that befalls so many fairytale royalty.

They're not actually "absent", it was established before in the last part that Queen Angeline could still speak and move in the painting, she just didn't do it in front Winifred. And now with Vincent by her side as king they're practically a royal immortal couple.

In fairness, though, she isn't shown speaking in this draft. I think that Angeline's power is based on visibility. It's possible that she influenced Winifred to take her home. (Are vampires really that interested in paintings of blonde-haired, blue-eyed women?) By drawing in Vincent and making a king, her power to rule those who viewed the painting was cemented.

I think I get what you're saying so Angeline only had a very limited amount of power before when Winfred brought her home, but now with Vincent beside her as king their power is very strong?

Yeah, I think so. She could have pulled Winifred in at any time, but didn't. She needed a king.

There's something funny about the way Winifred's head is blocking off Angela's face.

'Funny ha-ha' or 'funny had-to-cram-three-figures-into-a-tiny-box'? I'm just glad that in what little thumbnails I do, I was able to show her eyes.

"Funny ha-ha." It might have been unintentional, but I was reminded of the posters for the spoof spy movie GET SMART.

As much as I like Anne Hathaway, that was unintentional, or at least not a conscious decision.

I don't know how you do it, but every time you make an epilogue like this, it looks better than I ever had imagined. I thought the frame would be the same size as it was before the epilogue but this is much better. I wasn't sure how you would show Queen Angeline in this considering she took up most of the frame before but it works quite well here, since we already know what she's wearing all we really need to see of her is the top part of her head as well as her eyes that sort of say:

"Sire."

"Maybe later."

Badum tish!

The take on Vincent Pale in this is also very unique as it appears from his new look that he's happy with his new wife. In keeping with the mention of fairy tales, he's looking an awful lot like the type of king you would imagine from one of those tales. I especially like the beard you gave him, it gives him a more dignified appearance.

Finally, it looks like Winifred will not only be the first subject in Underborough, but she also might soon be a high ranking member in the new royal court. The only remaining question now is: what happens to Abigail Pale?

Overall score: 10/10.

Yeah, just a bit. That was a request of the commissioner. Just a hint of it, not mentioned in the text. (I guess it's more than a hint at this point, but I didn't want to be too subtle.)

Good to know people know who they are! I guess I put them in pretty early as far as epilogues go, so hopefully it's not too confusing if this is some folks' only exposure to the Underburbs universe.
