AHHHH I KNOW I'M LATE BUT BETTER LATE THEN NEVER. I had been so busy q 7 q //sobs
anyway ...

Your style was really remerkable and this entry really caught my eye when you had been sending it in q v q
also the scene idea is so very lovely because the both of them weren't meant to be together in the first place so I could
imagine them sneaking out and meeting in secret in the moonlight xD that's at least what I imagine when I look at this. Also
coles armor design looks very stunning >//< very great work with this and thank you so much for this great entry.

Thank you very much Ryui-chii !
Sad I didn't had more time to finish it...

I always have a big problem to come back to my previous drawing/artwork after some time...because I see so many problems that I want to erase it and started again...
In fact that's happenning a lot (too much) these days. Big troubles ^^'

Even my sketches I quite always do 5 or 10 versions (even more) before I feel confortable with haha
Crazy stuff

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-01-05 12:20:10 +0000 UTC]

oh, I feel you! it can be tough to go on at times.. but I think the best thing you can do is actually go on instead of leaving it unfinished.

though sketches are there to be.. unfinished. to figure out what looks best and to make the most out of whatever you want to portray~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrDessin In reply to Ryui-chii [2017-01-08 20:11:12 +0000 UTC]

Right...I'd try to explain the best I can about my sketches chaos haha

In fact when I start a character concept (for instance), I do a first sketch, probably a stiff pose at first then I add another layer to clean it and change the pose...more dynamic, and so on...
So... the last character concept (let's say the 5th one) is probably completely different (shapes, size, clothes...) than the very first one.

This is really a chaos process...but it kinda works.
I don't say I do that all the time ^^

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-01-12 16:19:40 +0000 UTC]

oohhh I see! that's actually a quite different approach than mine--
I mostly start drawing stick figures to find out which pose I like best or I draw thumbnail sketches to figure out a fitting composition. these can- depending on the drawing - be a lot of sketches, but I prefer this way rather than starting over again after you've already drawn half the picture >_>
as long as it works though, why not? c:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrDessin In reply to Ryui-chii [2017-01-14 10:58:16 +0000 UTC]

Sure I also do like this ^^
Not necessarly stick figures, but thumbnails for sure.

Like I previously said my process are chaos haha

Just one thing...I draw things very fast when I do...to keep the flow and not trying to control too much what I'm doing...I have somehow the feeling my hand act way faster than my brain XD
I know that's certainly sounds super weird ^^'

But yes, sometimes I don't know what to draw (or probably want to avoid to do the same figure, sizes, moves etc).. and so...I try new shapes and such...that's really fun

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-01-16 22:07:18 +0000 UTC]

oh really? even lineart, colouring etc?
I always need an eternity to finish sth o v o

I think experimenting is very good to improve c: I rarely do it actually >_> //kicked

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrDessin In reply to Ryui-chii [2017-01-16 22:15:41 +0000 UTC]

Haha it depends to be fair... and sure I also need an eternity (if not more) to (really) finish something as well !

If I take a look at all my drawings/paintings, there is probably only 10% finished ^^'
I'm probably gonna put the rest in a garbage one day...I don't know

Like you said yeah, experimenting kick some ass
I'm doing it these days trying to compete in the ArtWar contest (Cubebrush site here : forums.cubebrush.co/t/cubebrus… ).
Tho I didn't post anything yet (but got tons of concepts !)

The purpose is to make a Fantasy or sci-fi champion (not both combine sadly (it could have been fun too ^^)) - 2D  or 3D.
There is already very good contestants there !

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-01-17 20:57:11 +0000 UTC]

oh, really! I feel you with that, I mostly sketch and barely finish anything.. and when I do it takes long---
but don't throw them away! isn't it cool to see how much you've improved? I love finding drawings from when I was like 10 and compare them to drawings from now c:

oh, I see. good luck then~
I might have a look at the entries if I can find them somewhere c: sounds really interesting~

Otherwise here are the entries (for 2D) forums.cubebrush.co/c/art-chal…

Oh yeah !

A lot of pros there as well
It's always nice to learn some tricks and things from each artists (pros or not for sure !).

And I think contests are always a good way to push yourself beyond your limits.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-01-30 19:37:58 +0000 UTC]

ohhh, yeah, that's absolutely true! I haven't participated in a contest for a while though... probably because I didn't really expect to win anyway, so I've rather spent my time on doing other stuff..
probably though that's the wrong attitude. one should rather participate just to push themselves out of their comfort zone and beyond their limits, not even with any expectations to win!
then your own price is the experience and the growth /////that sounds so cheesy LOL
like... the journey is the reward~
ahhh I might get into it soon again > u >

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrDessin In reply to Ryui-chii [2017-01-30 20:20:17 +0000 UTC]

To be honest I never excpect to win at all also...especially a big contest like that haha

We always learn something from other (cool & experienced (or not)) artists !
What you said didn't sounds cheesy at all don't worry

Keep arting ^^
If you're curious what I'm doing...here it is : forums.cubebrush.co/t/art-war-…
Sure there is better work out there haha

You still have a month or so to participate...BUT, you have to create a page in the forum (and not at the end of the contest ! *very important* ) and explain your process ideas and all...and sure some sketches, artworks, etc...

Good luck & sure I'll help you if you need some advices !
Sure there are also a lot of moderators and helpers on the site too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-01-31 18:56:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, if you keep improving and striving to improve, one day you might be the one who has a chance to win!

Ohh, it looks really cool! I like the composition~

ohhhh I didn't mean I'd participate in that specific contest! thanks for the offer though c:
I meant the next time I stumble over a contest I will consider it! especially if the topic seems interesting u v u
I think that probably sounds like a lousy excuse (or a realistic estimation of my capabilities LOL), but atm I have started a lot of drawings and promised to draw a lot, so I don't think I am able to start even more drawings @ - @

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrDessin In reply to Ryui-chii [2017-01-31 20:56:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh sorry then !
And thanks a lot for your kind words
I always push people - bad habit haha ^^

You can't imagine how many artworks (or contests) I also promised to do/try/failed haha...even if I'm not really sure if I could do (or finish) them ^^'
Another (very) bad habit :/

But at least I try; that's maybe not the best...but make me improve somehow...
I'm also doing this one on CG Cookie at the moment (same ending as Art war ^^' noooo - so I want to finish this one first) - Lemon Maid contest ( community.cgcookie.com/t/the-w… ).
I do each of them since last year (about 4-5 contest by year - 1 unfinished so far (pokémon one - if you search in my sort of gallery haha)).
Sure I still have many flaws (especially on values & colours (and even after learning / trying / failing (again ?) ), but I'm really happy with my improvements since a little year (9-10 months about)).

Dang I always whrite a novel, sorry again !

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-01-31 21:09:43 +0000 UTC]

Nawww I see-- hrm... though in my opinion keeping promises is really important.. or you'll lose trust @ - @
I think a good habit of mine is that I keep promises regarding drawing no matter what-- especially if there is a deadline I'll push myself to get it done until then!

ooh! two at the same time? that's also really cool!
ohh pff, I don't think anyone's ever going to be perfect c: so that's totally fine! have you noticed a great improvement? oohhh maybe you should do an improvement meme c:

that's no problem at all! although I might respond slightly slower to novels, I love to read them and I love to write novels as well LOL
usually I'm the one doing this, I'm glad someone else could surpass me hahaha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrDessin In reply to Ryui-chii [2017-01-31 21:31:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I know !
I was maybe not very clear in my sentence sorry about that; in fact it's generally because I want to do too much contests, and it happens that I completely forget some of them on the road because I'm busy with other stuffs (or other contest, etc...).

So, yeah it's usually contests ^^' (and big one...so I don't think that's a big problem...because you know I got infinite chances to loose them (all ) - but like I said previously, that's not my purpose to win...if I do, that's cool (I mean wow, how ?), it happens only one time...but I was very proud because I did the drawing in only just one day...and the judges didn't know me at all...and honestly I could do better than I did; I was doubling happy because one of my friend on DA was the winner (I was 3rd))

I can't really say if I have really noticed big improvement (there is certainly - one of my art friend constantly told me since few months - and I believe her)...but for sure I try (often) to have more dynamics / better flow for my characters - before they were too stiff.
Lately with Art war contest, I'm really digging all the process to design a character (that's really a bigger task than I expected at first, I mean really !)
There is certainly a lot more to say, but all in all - I think I have won 2-3 years in that "chaos" process - because you know...art block is always on the path somehow...I know many artists (even some pros) go through this one day or another...

Sorry for the last sad part but...I guess I'm not the only one to talk about it.

Haha yeah I know...please don't read all what I say
Especially when it's probably unreadable / shady / weird...or worst !
Not sure if I'm glad to hear this haha (but don't worry I already heard that thousand times ^^)

Ok that's official I whrite even more this time :/

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-02-04 21:21:26 +0000 UTC]

ufufuf late reply--

LOL omg okay :'D but you probably draw some personal art on the way as well, right?

gotta lose them all o 7 o)9 //throws pencil
if you manage to not expect anything, that's great!
for me it's like... I tell myself not to expect anything and I KNOW I have no chance to win, but..you know... there is this tiny bit of hope deep inside :'D
that sounds great! What kind of contest was it that you won? WHat was it about?

Oh, that sounds great! You mean "winning a few years" as in "improving faster"?
I feel you with art block ; u ; although I don't know if there is a real definition? for me it's mostly like.. a block in my head? Wanting to draw and not wanting to draw at the same time, feeling like it doesn't help..
buuuut atm I am fully engaged with drawing, so I know exactly what to draw o 7 o)9

lolol it's fine u v u
I like to read your novels :'D
btw.. you're from France, right? je parle le francais parfaitement.... not. //kicked

MrDessin In reply to Ryui-chii [2017-02-10 23:12:36 +0000 UTC]

Arrrg certainly  even more late reply ^^""""

Honestly that is some time now I have been doing personal art...

And yeah probably gonna loose them all haha ^^
But I still have a little part in my mind that is saying me -"you can do it, one do or another, I'm sure !"-
So yeah, about you said in fact.

The contest I won was about Halloween and such...But I was not very inspired...
In fact, that probably will sound weird but, more the contest is big and there is also a lots of people, more I'm interested to try it.
When the goal to reach the cup looks even more impossible, well you know the end ^^

And yes I really improve faster these days (months) because I'm really totally focus on what I'm doing...and even when I don't post a lot (dang that's already 1 month and a half here arg :/ )

Coming to the art block, well it could be very different each time - struggle with values, colours, compositions, anatomy....whatever it is (or all haha), I try to beat it, or doing other things that don't need to make you think too much...

Gosh I have the feeling each time I try to make it shorter it's even bigger story ^^""""""""""
Et oui je suis français vivant en France...
Tu habites où si ce n'est pas indiscret ? Dans un pays francophone maybe ou des origines françaises ?

Otherwise are you gonna join the Artwar contest ?
Still, more than 2 weeks again ^^

Ciao a+

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-02-20 15:34:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's interesting! I'd rather participate somewhere I'd actually have a chance to win.. but participating in impossible-to-win-contests probably kills hope, so you ONLY draw for yourself, right?

Lol-- yup. Art block comes in all different ways. Or well, I think I'll rather call it a struggle more than an actual block-- For me, my biggest struggle is probably inspiration. If I feel like everything turns out weird, I am not really inspired either.

J'habite en Allemagne~ Euh.. J'ai apprendu le francais en école, mais je suis trop mal en parler le francais. :'D je ne sais si c'est le grammaire correctement, c'est tous que je rappele.
OKAY-- I feel like everything was totally wrong, I had to look up the easiest verbs and struggled with the spelling :'D only sentence I remember: je parle le francais parfaitement. but I don't //kicked// french actually is such a great language and I slowly start regretting not having put up with my vocabulary when I learned it at school... maybe I'll start teaching myself again, I still know some basics. I can order crêpe. Surviving in France - check!

nope u v u still a lot of work to be done orz

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrDessin In reply to Ryui-chii [2017-02-20 20:22:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm not very sure if you really know "where" you can win a contest...I mean even an easy one (at the first look) could be tricky one with last (almost) perfect artwork coming from nowhere at the end haha...sometimes I'm not even sure if the people who hold the contest got enough time to really take a look at each piece.
I had also the case where you have the feeling...even if your piece looks pretty good (and compared to others) but got no chance to win because well...there is some cheat somewhere ? or other bad stuffs like this (I had the case where one of my friend had posted an artwork, which hasn't been count for the contest - super lame honestly...).
Or false contests, etc...
Coming back to your (sort of ?) question, no, even if it looks I'm drawing only for myself, I really like sharing my stuffs with others, and also got critiques, comments or else

But all in all, my biggest troubles to even got the chance to be in the top, is because I begin too late, or I try to make multiple contests at once (with multiple tries on each one hum...), and on the top of all, I'd never really finished my pieces (I really try to avoid this now, I mean for real - that's yet a big advance right ? ^^)

Oh yeah...struggles everywhere ^^'
Sometimes from weird things comes the best insipration - it happens right ?
And I really think this struggle about "loss of inspiration" - every artists got it from time to time...
The best way to avoid it (maybe that's a bad advice, I don't know but...) - I look at many paintings, crafts, environments, whatever it is to fuel my mind with it.
Like a friend of mine said me few days/weeks ago, that's almost impossible to be original in creating something.
I sadly have to agree on that point...and we also can't know everything about every artists and their works for sure...

Bonjour l'Allemagne !
No problem if you have lost everything you've learned previously, no worries !
That maybe sounds super weird but I don't really like to speak french, even with french people on here haha
Crêpe with Nutella?

Good luck with your unfinished creations then !

ps : sorry if I've done many faults on my previous comment...and probably again on this one ^^'
But for a frenchy, I guess I'm not too bad haha

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-02-20 21:48:00 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty mean >:0

Ohhh-- no no, that's not what I meant! I just meant.. if you participate in contests without having any actual hope to win, you draw more for yourself than for the contest!

uhh... yup. that's an advance indeed :'D it's quality, not quantity, that counts o v o)b

Oh! Regarding this.. I've recently found a book about this exact topic. It said that you can barely create something truly "new", even creativity itself consists of taking things that are already there and combining them in an original way~

je voudrais un crêpe avec du jambon et du fromage.
Woaah, really? Why don't you like it?
I loooove to speak German-- I love to form beautifully eloquent sentences that I am not able to form in English (yet), decorating them with words, being precise.. I like German. English as well though. "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world."

don't worry c: I can understand it LOL
actually I was super surprised when I saw you're French. Like... I don't mean it in an offensive way, it's just that I've ONLY made bad experiences with French people speaking English-- maybe I've met the wrong people? I have no idea. is that a thing in France as well? since you said "for a frenchy you're not too bad", that sounds like other French people actually aren't as good at speaking English..?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrDessin In reply to Ryui-chii [2017-02-21 22:08:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah but you know...mean people are everywhere sadly
Here or elsewhere...

But still I'm doing contest bounded to (all) the rules...so that's not really like if I really was doing my very own personal stuff here haha

Uhmmm...I gotta say I try (I say try ^^') to match quantity with quality too more I draw...but yeah still a long path for this...

I also read and heard (from great/famous artists) that you only could find the best creations in (very) old art/artists (usually painters).
Honestly I'm not 100% sure of that fact but whatever...
Maybe we (everybody ?) just think too much about it.

Ok Bon choix de crêpe ^^
But I always like some dessert one hehe - Nutella, sugar, salted caramel *miam* (yummy) !!
It's not really I don't like to speak french but...not easy to describe it really why hum...
By the way I'd never learn German but Spanish (and I almost forgot everything haha)

Don't worry at all - I think French are considered the world best looser in English language - and I'm sure many will agree with me (even french people).
Maybe it's a recurent problem since decades and decades with a familiar tension between United Kingdom/ France...who knows ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-02-26 11:49:50 +0000 UTC]

ahh-- maybe I'm bad at explaining myself //kicked
I mean like.. you don't draw for the contest, but to improve yourself. even if that means you are not drawing what you want and have to stick to the rules, but it's still something "for you", it's not that your primary goal is to win a contest but to win experience! if that makes sense @_@

In very old artists? oh, why do they think so?
I think especially the development of art over time is important to take into account. If we sticked to what people did 500 years ago we wouldn't be where we are today. There are some great achievements that can still be super helpful today (for example that thing about painting yellow and blue next to each other, creating a green if you're looking at it from afar), but I don't think the best creations are only the old ones but can be found over time.

that's good as well //gives crêpe
okay :'D I guess I still don't get it, but I won't force you to speak french LOL
ah, hola! cómo estás?

oh noes :'D I don't know why that is... my parents once met a French guy who spoke PERFECT English, like you wouldn't even hear he's French. Unfortunately he was super arrogant >_>
though I think there are a lot of countries with pretty funny accents in English! the one I dislike the most is the German accent when speaking English @ v@

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrDessin In reply to Ryui-chii [2017-02-26 13:16:39 +0000 UTC]

Maybe that's just me who totally don't get it right too haha don't worry about that.
And sure it totally make sense what you're saying.

Don't really know to be fair...but I think they probably much talk about that old paintings are better for a good practice or something like that (but again maybe that's just me who understand it like that haha).
But sure I'm usually stunned by some new artists (tho they probably aren't new? don't know...) and sometimes very young.

Hehe ^^ No problem and sorry for (again) the bad explanation about it...
Hola hola ! Estoy bien y tu ?

oh yeah...some French are arrogant...I guess that's a trait I usually heard from foreigners, but no we aren't all like this ^^'
Sure English accents from other countries are fun to hear

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ryui-chii In reply to MrDessin [2017-02-27 20:40:35 +0000 UTC]

alright~ or maybe we're talking at cross purposes all the time LOL

oh, I see.. hrm.. I guess the best practice is drawing from life because whatever you want to draw, if it contains objects of some sort (not talking about abstract art here) it always evolves from something we already know. I think that's what the old artists back then did as well..?? not sure about that though :'D

estoy bien! uhm... qué fruta más rica! //eats apple
hahah-- actually that is one of the few sentences I can remember and that is because of the horrible translation in our text book-- it just sounded ridiculous, no one would actually use those words in German :'D but that's why I still know that sentence~

ooohh, no! I didn't want to say all french people are like this!
I bet French people are super nice (that's also what I've heard from other Germans), it's just that I don't understand them >_> and it probably takes all sorts. I mean - even if some stereotypical traits apply to a person from a certain culture, they still are not the same as every other person from the same culture~
