Thanks. This was through glass as well, so I'm very pleased with the result (even though I had to vignette the corners)

They are very small as well (no more than 10-15cm). Cute things with those moustaches!

WOW... we saw some 'burrowing' owls recently & they were small but i think yours are smaller & yes, definately very cute

Im not sure if the softening was a good idea, there are beautiful details of the bird should not be covered, isn't there a different solution?

With my limited PS skill I did try a background mask, but it just looked silly because of the strong highlights in the edges of his feathers, so I settled on this. I did keep the most important details (his face), but I take your point? You want the original to play with?
