Description My entry for the Abandoned places contest. (more at [link] )

Any ideas WTF is this? lol

Okay, it’s the inside of an old abandoned water-cooling tower in Brno. The shape and construction is similar to cooling towers used at nuclear power plants, but as this one belongs to the old steam plants, it is several times smaller. The object was declared a technical monument.

In this picture I tried to show the “wooden like” texture inscribed into the concrete by water and interesting lighting given by the construction itself. For both the HDR worked best.

Chosen composition compromises the angle, where both the light coming down through the tower and the water with its reflections and textures are visible, and give some dynamic to the otherwise static scene. The hard part was the fact the tower was recently fixed to prevent people from getting in (latticed round the base) so I was unable to use tripod or even to look in the viewfinder when shooting through the lattice, as I had to push the camera through it. Moreover only half of the pool was flooded.

Processing:
A single shot HDR with some blendings, curves and noise reduction.

Enjoy and thank you for your comments!

That's an excellent shot, especially under those conditions. Glad you didn't drop your camera...

It's perfect for HDR, brings out the wood really well. I also like how the light comes trouth the top. And I love the angle.

awww, thank you very much Ruth!

hehe, yes I was lucky the camera was small enough to pass through the lattice. Only pity I didn't go there with camera before - there had been condensation boards on the top, no lattice and it had been possible to get in from the top, really great place...

LOL oh okay, I was confused. haha, sorry I might be a tad slow today. I kinda wanted to see more of the structure,I love the picture but maybe it would be cool if you took a couple, and stitched them together? all in the same style, u know, were the last one left off u do another one etc, it would be cool a little bigger if I could see more of the building I think. I don't know if that makes a lot of sense or not but if it doesn't I'll explain it better lol...

Yes I understand, you mean a panorama.. but for this I would need the tripod. Pity it was latticed, stupid me I didn't get there before, when it was possible it get in and even to the upper parts (on the "ball" in middle).

Northern from the tower is an industrial area - looks great and quite abandoned too. But it is fenced with barbed wire and guarded. I think of getting there and taking another abandoned shots... but I'm scared to do it alone. Maybe if there is another crazy deviant in Brno who would like taking a photo-session with me?

you should do that! that would look so awesome! don't let some barbed wire and a little trespassing get in the way of art! lol, grab ur balls and get going! (hehe just kidding, well not really,) I think it would look kick ass...if i was near i'd help u but, lol, no luck with that....
